It was. E911 knew physical phone location for land lines. Calltaker verified location of incident, saving ~40 seconds. That was estimated to save 1500 people a year for NYC. Cell phones only knew cell tower location then. Stations had maps and directions. NYC.

How do I know this? I spent 3 mths training in a police force control room (didn't get past training fortunately) and it was maybe two or three button clicks to translate those co-ords onto a map and that was just as the calltaker. The controllers could see the same map with the cops locations on.

When I was in high school in TX, I was lucky as a box score calltaker at the Corpus Christi Caller-Times to be making roughly $10.50 an hour.

In my dispatch center we're currently testing a tool that promised to be able to easily and accurately review every phone call with AI.
It has easily quadrupled the workload for our QA person AND still doesn't work. Like, it can't even tell the caller's voice apart from the calltaker levels of bad.

This seems common to the rollout of AI tools basically everywhere right now. They do an impressive demo for the bosses and then when they actually put them in the field the workers who actually have to use it discover that there's a lot of basic shit the AI can't do correctly.
NEW - A new FDA AI tool that could speed up reviews of medical devices is struggling with simple tasks, like uploading documents, according to two people familiar.
A separate tool, called Elsa, which was rolled out to FDA employees Monday is also having issues.

PSA: if you hear a clip of a 911 call and go, wow, that's so clear, the calltaker was clearly negligent for not recording X, Y, or Z being said - it's entirely possible the calltaker DID NOT HEAR IT.
