Large, somewhat pear-shaped beetle, the Fiery Searcher, Calosoma scrutator, that climbed up into a plant. Thorax iridescent blue, bordered by metallic ruby red. Wing covers with many fine vertical grooves, colored metallic green, rimmed in ruby red. Forest trees in background.

Another chapter of my thesis is out!
We used genomic data generated from across the range of the Western Balkan highland endemic beetle Calosoma pentheri support the recognition of two distinct species. Biogeography, divergence estimates, phylo & population genetics, etc.

My first Calosoma beetle to show up at the light trap. It’s absolutely striking and one of the natural enemies we want to keep around. It eats the pests we don't want. When we napalm with broad pesticides without a good reason we kill incredible beetles like this.
