#calosoma
Monday I tried to befriend this beetle who was on the floor of the bus (and get her out of the aisle somewhere safer and eventually outside) but she did not appreciate being held, escaped repeatedly and once pinched me before hiding under the wheelchair ramp. Calosoma sayi per iNat.

My third PhD chapter to get published (one more to go!!!). This project examined the biogeography and divergence estimates of Calosoma (Carabophanus) gestroi from the Ethiopian Highlands. We used HyRAD-X to recover genomic markers mostly from fresh specimens.

Orogeny of Ethiopian sky islands and Pliocene climate shifts promoted budding speciation and complex admixture in flightless Calosoma ground beetles
Abstract. Flight loss, through its effect on the resulting dispersal capacity and gene flow, has been proposed as a driver of diversification. Ground beetl

The rainbow one is a ground beetle in the genus Calosoma (Carabidae) and the other is a prionine longhorn beetle (Cerambycidae, something close to Mallodon). Good beetles 👍

"First report on the edibility of X" is an incredibly powerful paper title (more so when you see what they're talking about)

Climatic swings triggered incipient postglacial speciation of flightless Calosoma beetles in Western Balkan sky islands
Climatic change drastically shapes the ecology and evolution of lineages across landscapes. In mountainous regions, climatic oscillations drive fine-scale biome shifts and modulate habitat availabilit...

Having the best time at University of Arizona Coleoptera collections. Click bait with these big bottomed Calosoma but my heart is with these cute little Lebiinae ‘ground beetles’ Calybe laetula 🧡

I hope everyone is having a beetleful day! If not, hopefully this helps 😉

Species: Calosoma calidum

Another chapter of my thesis is out!
We used genomic data generated from across the range of the Western Balkan highland endemic beetle Calosoma pentheri support the recognition of two distinct species. Biogeography, divergence estimates, phylo & population genetics, etc.

We did this, in part because my thesis work uses this probe set in my Calosoma projects. But also because we need clarity in Geadephaga, more data is needed given the taxonomic bias. The deep phylogenetic relationships are consistent with recent research.

Damn you Calosoma (Callisthenes) breviusculum & C. erwesemanni!
Why do you gotta be like that?

Sculpturing is going to be the worst of doing all this. The balance between illustration and realism is hard

Working on a poster, and I may have spent a little more time than necessary on this beetle illustration.
Theres only one blurry photo of a live Calosoma (Carabophanus) gestroi on the internet.

I presented the important part of my thesis work at Biology24 in Zurich yesterday. It was great and I had a ton of interesting questions. A few other museum folk were very interested in my molecular lab methods!

Good Monday morning. It's now 7:34 a.m. & 43°F outside, with a pale blue sky.

My daily post today, from my "Insect" files, features a photo of a large, metallic green ground beetle know as a Fiery Searcher (Calosoma scrutator).

What is Calosoma?

Just learned about #InverteFest! So exciting!

All of the flora and fauna in my work are based on species here in Puerto Rico/Borikén and the Caribbean. These guys are

- Exophthalmus quindeimpunctatus
- Calosoma (Castrida) alternans
- Macrohaltica jamaicensis

Odense har måske bare brug for sycophanter.

Altså Calosoma sycophanta. De æder egeprocessionsspinderen.
