Ah, but from JLR's own press release "Buyers are likely to be rich, “urban” and “very design literate, very technology literate”, Glover said."

It’s too big to fit in parking spaces.

It's time we had #CongestionCharging with a massive uplift for private cars over a certain size. #CarBloat

A car too big to fit in spaces probably shouldn’t be in urban areas #CarBloat

On the rear window thing, it's not necessarily as big a problem as it first seems (he says having been on several family holidays where the car is full to the roof...)

But something that is too big to fit in a normal parking space at time when there's a gradual realisation about #CarBloat...

Having spent too long reading about vans (for camper reasons), it's notable that the new Jaguar Type 01, noted for being very large, is basically the same size as a short wheel base Mercedes Sprinter. Like the vans that Amazon deliver stuff in (obviously less high) #carbloat #autobesity

you can be opposed to carbloat while realizing this is inconvenient

And many of the cars they insure present a real hazard to bike users due to #carbloat. Insurers need to recognise the risk posed by SUV body-types.

First time hearing the term #carbloat, loving it!

We do! Shifting the culture to recognize the safety of all road users is an important part of the conversation along with better understanding of the commercial determinants of vehicle size & the profits that auto-makers are making from #CarBloat

SUV bloat is also a thing, and some of them are too wide for typical width restrictors.

Councils should be empowered to put length/GVW restrictions to deter #CarBloat @greenlibdems.org.uk @libdemcycling.org.uk
Research finds that informing drivers about the risks SUVs pose to cyclists and pedestrians makes zero difference to their purchasing decision.

What would work?

- Treating SUVs as we do other harmful things: higher taxes, design constraints, limit advertising.

This is the devastating effect of #CarBloat perfectly encapsulated in one byline (via my hometown paper, The Press Democrat).

Hey there lovelies! Here's a big weekend blog / essay I wrote, just for you.

Australia's government is following the US and the EU in failing to push back on car bloat - and in doing so, locking climate policy that's too weak

(while also making transport more expensive, and cities less safe)
Big cars are dead weight dragging down climate policy
Australia's government has released a new transport climate policy. But it doesn't deal with the problem of car bloat: the main driver of rising emissions.

This is excellent work by the London Assembly - #CarBloat is a danger to vulnerable road users and the environment
MOTION AGREED: As the size of UK cars continues to grow, we are calling for tighter limits on passenger vehicle size and bonnet height and higher parking charges for SUVs. www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...

It’s not wide enough. Partly Carbloat. Standards were different 30 years ago.

Plus it was reserved for dual carriageway, not a modern multimodal corridor.

I saw this visual demonstration of ‘car bloat’ on our London high street. Cars are getting wider on average by 2cm per year in a profit-driven trend. The average UK car now takes up 1/3 more road space and win’t fit in a traditional home garage. #autobesity #carbloat #carspread #visionzero

Carbloat and carbrain are inextricable, and I know this because my feed today is full of arguments with a doubling-down, self-described "boomer grandmother" who has so thoroughly bought the line that if you have a family or dog you need to own a large SUV that she thinks sedans don't have A/C.

We call it #CarBloat because these things keep getting larger, much like a rotting whale carcass on a beach

I don't expect much progress will happen on this issue during the incoming administration -- in fact, quite the opposite. But hopefully we're getting close to hitting rock bottom in terms of pedestrian safety overall.

Trucks and SUVs keep getting bigger. Here’s how they should be redesigned to be less deadly
Pickups and SUVs have become bigger and heavier over the past two decades—which raises the likelihood that pedestrians will die in a collision.

Pleased to see some action in the UK to address #CarBloat, which is putting people's lives at risk, as well as damaging roads and dominating public spaces.

Car manufacturers continue to enlarge their product—taller/wider/longer. Parking spaces are becoming too small. Their increased size makes it harder to identify small humans, & more are being injured/killed. Their GHG emissions have also increased. #carbloat

We enforce seat belts. Air bags. Any number of features to make a car safer for its occupants. (as we should!)

But we don’t have a minimum standard to protect kids walking to school?!

This is outrageous, and needs to be changed ASAP.
