Officially home, sweet home! It’s been a long week. But, I’m grateful to be home and to have the next week working and traveling the District to hear from all of you.

The Carrizo Mountains northeast of Carrizozo and west of Capitan were perfect for a 5 hour run yesterday and 2.5 more this morning. Next up is the Capitans, New Mexico's only east-west mountain range.

Carrizozo is a railroad town in the Tularosa Basin. Founded in 1899, it became a key railroad stop for Lincoln County, which fueled its growth in the early 1900s. "Burro Serenade" began in 2006. Local artists paint aluminum burro statues to fund local animal welfare organizations.

The Valley of Fires Recreation Area is adjacent to the Carrizozo Malpais, one of the youngest lava flows in the continental U.S. Approx. 5,000 years ago, volcanic vents at Little Black Peak erupted, and the resulting molten rock flowed southward for 44 miles, creating a vast field of basalt lava.

Lava flow between Carrizozo and the Trinity Site (Manhattan Project/first nuclear bomb detonation). From Sierra Blanca, in the Sacramento mountain, the dark basalt flow ends just before the gypsum dunes of White Sands begins.
