At the time, there were several American efforts to annex BC, whose leaders were trying to decide whether to join the US or the newly created Dominion of Canada.
They chose Canada.
I am constantly surprised at how many Americans have a blind spot when it comes to Canada.

It would take many more months and a personal visit by Franklin to Montreal before they realized that the American invasion of Canada, begun in September 1775, was a complete failure.

About 1,700 Americans laid siege to the fort. It was defended by about 500 British regulars, 120 French Canadians, and their indigenous allies. It took the invaders almost a month to capture the fort and resume their march on Montreal. Winter was fast approaching.

It asked Britain for Canada, which it did not control, and a large area south of the Great Lakes occupied by British troops. Britain gave away that area but kept Canada.

This is a move straight out of the early American playbook.

We saw the same thing happen in the recent election campaign in Canada. Trump’s 51st state rhetoric helped the Liberals come from behind and win. A lesson not learned.

Carleton did not want anyone within the city walls who would not fight on his side. Many who left were English-speaking merchants, originally from the 13 colonies, who sided with the invaders.

This came after Congress had approved an invasion of Canada but before troops crossed the border. Delegates had persuaded themselves that most Canadians wanted to become Americans. Much like Trump today, they were wrong.
