Before the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, local hospitals were funded by subscriptions and voluntary contributions from individuals and local organisations. In 1922, the Abertillery & District Hospital Linen League was set up by local women to offer their help to the hospital.

Widows' Almshouses, Welsh Row, Nantwich: founded after the death of his wife and two sons within the space of a year, by Roger Wilbraham in 1676 when 'six widows took their lodging in the said almshouse; two in each house (for society)'. The charity continued into the 1930s.

Caroline Court, Woodstock. Six almshouses founded in 1797 by the Duchess of Marlborough for 'widows or maidens, of the age of 55 or upwards ... of sober life and good character’. Taken over and extended as housing for elderly people by Woodstock Borough Council in 1968.
