and Georgia.°° A garrison of thirty men was left to consolidate the settlement, which was named Charlesfort after King Charles IX, while Ribault sailed back to France, having promised to make a prompt return with reinforcements and supplies. The outbreak of the first of the Wars of Religion in France in 1562, however, meant that Coligny, a leading figure in the Protestant cause, could not spare the time, energy or resources to attend to his colonial venture, with the result that no further sailings could be attempted before 1564. In the meantime discipline in Charlesfort had begun to break down; the situation reached breaking point when the man left in command, Captain Albert, hanged one of the soldiers and expelled another from the fort. Albert was then murdered and one Nicolas Barré chosen to take his place. Short of supplies and despairing of ever being rescued, the garrison somehow managed to confect a makeshift vessel, cobbled together from local materials, even though none of them had any shipbuilding experience, nor indeed any knowledge of navigation. In August 1563 twenty-three desperate men set out on what would become one of the most remarkable epics of survival against the odds on the open sea. Remarkably, only one had died, chosen by lot to be eaten by the others, by the time that they were discovered by an English ship off the coast of Brittany. 61
