The new presenting team for BBC's Strictly Come Dancing made their first public appearance together at the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show in London on Friday. The Children’s Society has won a gold medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show for a garden designed to highlight the beauty found in imperfection, particularly relevant for supporting teenagers’ mental wellbeing. Designer Patrick Clarke explained that the garden challenges the unattainable standards of perfection often promoted on social media, which can harm young people’s mental health. Instead, it promotes the idea that imperfections build character and individuality. Key features include prickly poppies, symbolising that beauty can coexist with challenges, along with a bird’s nest fern in a drain and other plants with unique characteristics. Visitors navigate a deliberately crooked path with obstacles, representing life’s imperfect journey, leading to a sunken seating area for conversation and a private space under a twisted field maple tree for solitude. The garden uses repurposed materials, such as timber from imperfect trees crafted into furniture with visible ‘stitches’ that symbolise small interventions providing resilience, and concrete slabs revealing their inner beauty like terrazzo. Project manager Clarissa Freeman noted the design fosters a sense of being embraced by green space, known to benefit mental health. After the show, the garden will be relocated to a youth centre in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire, creating an accessible outdoor wellbeing space for local young people and the community. The initiative counters the notion of eliminating all life’s difficulties, emphasising that navigating challenges helps shape stronger, more characterful individuals.

King Charles and Queen Camilla attended the 2026 Chelsea Flower Show, enjoying the unique atmosphere of the event.
