#Chinashock

Germany is ground zero of the second #Chinashock, but Berlin is not fighting back, even as the shock erodes the country’s engineering sectors that are vital to its economic security.

Looking back over our most read publications of 2025, Brad Setser & @sandertordoir.bsky.social wrote in their January policy brief "#China is taking a dominant share of the global market in an ever-expanding set of industrial sectors." #chinashock

A permanent #eurobond scheme worth 2% of GDP would lock in 1.5–2% long-run growth, lower debt ratios, and give us the fiscal firepower to withstand shocks. In the eye of the second #ChinaShock Germany's refusal is chauvanistic blindness, blocking the very mechanism the continent needs.
So let me get this straight? #EUCO can suddeenly create all kinds of strategies to work around unanimity regarding defense and enlargement, but not when it comes to permanently integrating NGEU-tested fiscal machinery, like joint EU debt, larger budgets, or more flexible investment mechanisms?

At the G7 summit, Ursula von der Leyen urged collective action against China's dominance in rare earth elements, emphasizing the need for alternative suppliers to counter China's coercive trade tactics.

China Shock 2.0: China floods markets to hide its domestic collapse. It’s a system that delegated everything to algorithms, losing touch with reality. When "autopilot" ignores the crisis, a crash is certain. Time to switch back to manual control. #ChinaShock #Economy #GlobalCrisis

The Beijing skyscraper crash exposes a fatal gap in China’s "absolute control" narrative. Authorities ruled out terrorism and mechanical failure, blaming the pilot’s anxiety. This is classic systemic gaslighting to hide the truth about security vulnerabilities. #ChinaShock #SystemicRisk

Zhong Shaojun’s public purge proves Xi Jinping’s security campaign is consuming his inner circle. As Beijing drives "China Shock 2.0" to export industrial overcapacity globally, the fall of Xi’s former chief of staff shows political control overrides everything. #China #Geopolitics #ChinaShock

China Shock 2.0: The explosion at Russia’s Amur Gas Chemical Complex shatters Moscow’s flagship Sino-Russian project.
Rescued by $4.6B in Chinese state loans after Western firms exited, the fatal disaster highlights Moscow's total dependence on Beijing’s tech & capital.

China Shock 2.0 in action: by assembling SKD/CKD kits in the former MAN plant in Steyr (Austria), Chinese firms bypass EU tariffs and undercut local competitors by 30%. Driven by urban zero-emission mandates, fleets like DHL are shifting to Chinese e-trucks.

Then again the entire purpose of #PaxSilica is to build a redundant secured #semiconductor supply chain as a hedge against a secondary #ChinaShock.
My concern here is "demand side collapse" exposure for the #Philippines. What if they spent billions of dollars building #semiconductor infrastructure and demand did not come? The sunk cost would be massive and since these are specialized infrastructure it cannot be easily repurposed for other use.
While everyone is talking about #PaxSilica there's nothing concrete yet. It has the POTENTIAL for industrialization of the #Philippines but the build out would take decades. For now it's more a pledge for #semiconductor supply chain security than anything tangible.

China July PMI in contraction (49.2): new orders and domestic demand are falling. Amid #ChinaShock 2.0, Beijing bets heavily on high-tech output and cheap exports, clashing with new tariffs and job market weakness. #ChinaEconomy #Trade

Economists promised free trade would lift all boats—but the #ChinaShock sank U.S. manufacturing towns. Millions lost jobs, wages tanked, and communities crumbled. Now, economists admit they might have got it wrong #Econ #Trade #Jobs
Why economists got free trade with China so wrong
The "China Shock" is revisited, and it raises questions about why economists failed to see the costs of free trade.
