It's in print! My opinionated dive into the definition of "coevolution" is officially out in the December issue of @journal-evo.bsky.social

Don't ask “when is it coevolution?”—ask “how?”
Abstract. Coevolution has come to be widely understood as specific, simultaneous, reciprocal adaptation by pairs of interacting species. This strict-sense

This @asn-amnat.bsky.social conference will feature some excellent afternoon symposia (with no conflicting sessions), including one organized by my grad student Emma Choi, on using spatial & landscape population genomics to detect coevolution!
The ASN standalone meeting is this January! Tons of fun! Be there or be square!

Human-potato coevolution
1/ New paper out in Nature Communications!

We studied the salivary amylase gene, AMY1, in Indigenous Andean populations and found evidence that high AMY1 copy number rapidly increased in frequency, likely through recent positive selection.

Rapid adaptive increase of amylase gene copy number in Indigenous Andeans - Nature Communications
The salivary amylase gene exhibits copy-number variation linked to dietary shifts. Here, the authors describe an adaptive expansion of the amylase gene in Indigenous Andean populations coinciding with...

Bacteria–phage coevolution drives variation in bacterial wilt disease incidence via resistance–virulence trade-offs
Nature Microbiology, Published online: 12 June 2026; doi:10.1038/s41564-026-02373-9Phage–bacteria coevolution is associated with field-specific anti-phage defence and locally adapted phage populations, resulting in phage-resistant but weakly virulent pathogens.

I wrote about the stranger-than-fiction miracles of coevolution in nature and human society—and a smarter framework to understand ourselves. (Or: what connects avocados, ants who farm fungus, karma, and our relationship with dogs?)

NEW Publication!😄

Here, we show how #PhyKIT — a broadly applicable toolkit for #phylogenomics — can be used to construct phylogenomic data matrices (& quantify biases therein), detect anomalies in predicted orthology, calculate gene-gene coevolution, & more!

In which I pick apart the way I've understood the very definition of my field of study, and try to come up with something better.

When you see the skull it becomes obvious what involucres are. Also Thylacosmilus teeth never stop growing. There's a good argument for coevolution here with Smilodon (saber tooth cats, in North America) although Smilodon wasn't a polyphyodont.
