One of our volunteers has been hard at work processing a donation of expedition papers from the family of Dave Challis. Taking them out of old envelopes and folders, giving them new homes & cataloguing the contents.

Iron gall ink is fun in that it ranges from slightly to really acidic. So instead of just staining the paper, it actually etches it. If the batch is acidic enough, it can continue working on the page over the centuries, getting deeper and deeper.
