#Columbusing
this was a real point of discourse for the people emailing me and talking about me online. like it was literally the first one in the #Affection tag list. so easy for me to find! if I respected those spaces at all instead of Columbusing into them like an asshole.

Beige Columbusing, really.

White woman columbusing once again

I feel like this needs to be called Columbusing. At its best, you're an idiot to think you discovered this thing, especially if you think you have a claim to it. At its worst, you know it's not new but you're still acting like you're doing something new and being an absolute monster in the process.

"Pace the frontier"

Makes sense the broligarchs would choose this settler colonial metaphor, since their actual proposal is just a weak sauce columbusing of regulatory authority

Game Design and Game Studies are robust fully fleshed out fields that don't require historians Columbusing them, thanks though.
Also, I'm *so* happy the AHA is encouraging vibecoding of games, instead of drawing on colleagues who've been creating with students using Twine. And thank god *someone* is using video games in the classroom, at last! 🙃

And now my Columbusing comes to a screeching halt, since I see that @vtdigger.bsky.social was all over this when it happened last year. Props to the OGs: vtdigger.org/2025/06/04/v...

😂😂😂 meanwhile all the granola moms are Columbusing beef tallow and calling it a superfood.

I think that falls under the heading of "Columbusing" (acting like you discovered something that's been known to others for a long time)

The tech people have developed so many fun euphemisms for anti-competitive behavior. Figuring out which ones know they’re just rebranding and which ones are just Columbusing is a good time to be had by all.

Are we really at the point now where people are Columbusing *the idea of a game*?

I really shouldn’t get so flabbergasted by children

NYTimes Columbusing champagne socialists and limousine liberals rn
They're literally doing the meme.
August 25, 2026 at 12:30 AM
Exactly!! Why can’t they stop Columbusing and colonizing shit!? Is just so exhausting having them abuse and misuse everything we do for their own interests!! 😩😩😩
There’s no Woke 1 or Woke 2. There’s only staying woke. Everything else is white people nonsense that should be swiftly disregarded.

Is Dora "the Explorer" actually Columbusing?
August 11, 2026 at 6:40 AM
Columbusing is a Thing That Needed A Name from an old College Humor sketch for when (usually privileged) people ”discover” something that already exists and subsequently fuck it all up.

Unpopular take: I think ”gatekeeping” gets used too liberally to apply to any criticism of newcomers to a scene, particularly when asking those newcomers to respect the history, culture, and norms that built the scene the newcomers are joining. There’s a spectrum between gatekeeping and columbusing.

When he wasn't Columbusing the gospel singers he was playing guitar like a stock musician for Bar Rescue. Listen to the solo for 'Southside' and tell me I'm wrong.

Isn't it fun when someone uses AI to write a story about something that's existed in some form for 80+yrs, but they think it's new and they're so much better than older gens bc they discovered it? 😂😂

Tho I feel like at least the AI should've known this was Columbusing, even if the human didn't lol

Big downside to Columbusing games years after everyone else did is that Man of Medan requires you to play co-opt to get all the trophies, for whatever reason.

I was at a national conference where someone was promoting a public elementary school yoga curriculum. Zoo aesthetic, wall poster showed each pose with the name of a zoo animal. At first I was like, what in the Columbusing is this? — yoga already exists and lots of schools use it. 1/

I know “discovering” Olivia Dean is less like Columbus discovering the New World and more like Columbusing Columbus Day, but nevertheless www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLzp...

“We can genocide Jewish people because they’re so good at everything and don’t feel pain” is not only original Nazism but also the justification of the Atlantic Slave Trade, Trail of Tears, Europe’s colonization of five continents. This is bespoke Christopher Columbusing.

That type of racism is what leads directly to “Columbusing”
