We can also confirm we raised over £6.5k at our Remembrance Sunday lunch this year. This helps us maintain the Contalmaison Cairn, take injured veterans and school children to the Somme, as well as funding other educational Remembrance activities. Many thanks to everyone who participates 😍

We were privileged to spend the morning near Contalmaison with the Archaeoligists and veterans of the Rising Sons AIF in WW1 project. Fascinating ro watch them excavate trenches and gun pits.

That’s an excellent photograph. Contalmaison Chateau Cemetery was also on the black list, with the land owner reluctant to hand over the land. Obviously the issue was resolved!

A poignant reminder of the first day of The Somme - Lieutenant Gilbert Hattersley’s blood-stained map showing the planned advance.

He was wounded in the leg early on, the 11/Suffolk had the heaviest 34th Division casualties and didn’t reach Contalmaison.

Remembering them all today.

A poignant reminder of the first day of the Battle of The Somme - Lt Gilbert Hattersley’s blood-stained map showing the planned advance, up Sausage Valley, of the ‘Cambs Suffolks’ (marked ‘D Coy’ on the map), to Contalmaison.

Hattersley was wounded very early on.

Usually, I only post images of cards I actually own, but in this case, I purchased the card and the seller couldn't find it, so I don't have it in hand.

The writer was Germaine Magnier Barbon, who had just returned to Contalmaison in 1922 (she wasn't there in the 1921 census).

McCrae's Memorial to the 16th Bn Royal Scots ("Edinburgh's Own") Contalmaison, today. Designed by Jack Alexander & unveiled in 2004. Reputedly first proposed by members of the battalion in 1919 & therefore the last of the 'original' Great War memorials to be built.

I do not know why Contalmaison is such an outlier. By 1936, it was up to 19.4% foreign nationals, which is much more in line with its near neighbors. I don't know why it lagged.

Contalmaison is a weird little outlier in 1931 — a much lower percentage of foreign-born residents than its neighbors in the devastated heart of the battlefield. But it caught up by 1936, when it was 19.4% foreign-born, which would make it green on this map.

Germaine was born in Contalmaison. It sounds like she probably evacuated to Montargis (south of Paris) during the war.

In 1926, she lived in Contalmaison with her Italian husband, brother-in-law, and 2 kids (Maxime recovered from his illness). She was working in a shop owned by her mother, Stella.

I'm not sure whether this postcard is from a civilian living in Fricourt. I'm still looking for the person who wrote it (a son writing to his parents in May 1921). He could have been a local civilian, a laborer doing reconstruction work, or a visitor.
