This c.13th century effigy of a bishop is set into the northern wall of the chancel of Corcomroe Abbey, in the Burren of County Clare.

The bishop is depicted in his vestments of an alb and chasuble, with an unusual mitre on his head.

Corcomroe Abbey • The Burren • Clare

Founded by Donal Mór O’Brien, King of Thomond, in c.1194. It is beautifully situated in a green valley surrounded by the karst stone landscape of the Burren.

The monks knew Corcomroe as Petra Fertilis (the Fertile Stone).

Corcomroe Abbey as she is, roofless but stalwart against the elements. There is a peace that exists here, and the spirits of ancients. The bare Burren separates green grass from grey sky background, while the bricked masonry walls rise above all.

It was lovely to bring a group to Corcomroe Abbey yesterday. While my tours have a strong focus on food and farming, I enjoy sharing different aspects of our culture with guests. The 12th Century Abbey is well worth a visit if you are in the Burren

In the early/mid aughts, Ireland became a home away from home for me. I travelled there several times between 2001 and 2007, sometimes solo.
