#CounterNarratives
I wrote about how the 2020 protests hurt Trump politically. I also wrote about how counternarratives about left-wing violence are just spin — and wildly at odds with the reality of extremist violence. Gift link: wapo.st/3SOEv6e

Fundamentally, the two lessons of Watergate were that 1. For the press, a criminal president is great for business & 2. Conservatism as a basis of social organization could not survive continuing social progress without constructing total counternarratives to the mainstream press.
i think its a mistake to look for a discrete event. just read the founders’ writings beginning with the declaration of independence. trump is the exact thing they wanted to prevent

Since the early 2010s, social media has been identified with protesters. In the early days, social media was an effective tool for activists to organize and communicate with one another and directly with the public, providing counternarratives to the ones laid out in popular coverage.

"When we show girls that they’ve always been part of history, we equip them to believe that they can shape its future." In #AHAPerspectives, read how Jessica Ramos teaches counternarratives to her elementary students. 🗃️
Teaching Girls They Belong
Teaching counternarratives deepens elementary students’ understanding of history and helps underrepresented groups see themselves as part of the story.

This paragraph/answer ended: There's a scholar of nonviolence named George Lakey who says polarization is good. That’s when you have clarity. Sometimes people have to pick sides. You do not get authoritarians to behave better by being meek and gentle and polite. You get it by being strong.

If only there were signs or ya know warnings .. maybe constant efforts by certain subsets of historically maligned groups to use that technology to stop this

…

Hmm anyway this is what I’m reading

Trans rights are under attack, which means trans people don't need counternarratives against fascist propaganda, they just need to like, you know. Pretend it's not real. Make it look funny or illogical or stupid. Yeah, that works, I'm sure it will. Godspeed

It used to be "the left is making up all the stories of hate crimes or brutality." Now it's "don't let your heart be moved by the bad things we're doing."

Like it’s cute and very white how much of journalism dances around the reality of how racism was supported by their own desire to not respect Black people on line .. but like there’s a book about it

It’s fascinating how that gets left out

I largely agree with your analysis but I would personally add a fourth point that “Having never faced an actual primary, in 2024 or 2020, she and her positions were still indistinct enough to the electorate to make lies and counternarratives far too easy to swallow”

anyway i think more people would benefit from some self-examination of "i enjoy this thing but i know criticisms of it are correct and have a right to be heard, perhaps those criticisms are even vitally, urgently important counternarratives to stories about benevolent power"

Counternarratives exist. You're talking to one. Though, since you said your opinion is of no importance, I fail to see why you're still talking

Very dystopian stuff:

Canadian political candidates are getting pitched on signing up their supporters for apps that scan social media for negative comments about them, use AI to come up with counternarratives then post AI-generated comments defending them from their real human supporters’ accounts
Politicians are being sold AI-powered 'digital fighters'
A new app gets around bot bans by recruiting real people to post political messages generated by AI.

Communications matters at least as much as policy. The battle for public opinion on Trump's immigration policies could come down to which side makes the best documentaries:
