Because it shows you are climbing the escalation ladder way too slowly to meaningfully deter him so it will just cause him to escalate further because he thinks you’re weak. It’s the equivalent of sending Ukraine a single 1911 after the Russian invasion, it’s really a countersignal of escalation.

It may not make them stop their behavior but it WILL communicate to the abused person that they aren't alone AND make other bystanders reconsider joining in.

Yeah and the way social media works now means they can get sucked into a real bubble with just that signal and no countersignal. That wasn't a thing when many if not most parents were teens. I am also child free but I agree with you, these kids need their parents to prove guidance and context.

There are, to be sure, situations in which that is an actual problem. But I actually think that we are reaching a point where our tolerance for evil has become so vast that actually it is really far more important to countersignal that something is really beyond the goddamned pale
