#Counterfactual
That is pretty much always going to be true. The counterfactual is simply a functioning SCOTUS.

One can always sketch a counterfactual where (1) we are only moderately lucky and (2) abandoning caution saves hundreds of thousands of lives relative to the counterfactual unless there is no state, but I doubt science flourishes under completely stateless anarchy.

The OBR estimates that the post-Brexit trading relationship will leave UK productivity around 4% lower in the long run than continued EU membership.

That’s a counterfactual forecast, not a precise bill.

But it illustrates the scale of the economic challenge.

I don’t think it requires having a party and inviting Bella Hadid but the counterfactual of performative intolerance is not really better IMO

We share some tips on how to develop better intuition for how observational and experimental data should be combined to make good decisions.

Counterfactual thinking is at the heart of it!

You can try out your own intuitions by playing around with data: cicl-stanford.github.io/good_decisio...

While both novices and experts make incorrect inferences about the counterfactual types from the data (e.g. believing people benefit from acting when they don't), their decisions systematically follow these (incorrect) inferences.
October 12, 2026 at 3:44 PM
Balke & Pearl (1994) developed a normative model of how to do this. How do people's decisions compare? Not well! People are better than chance but far from optimal. They have difficulty inferring the counterfactual types from the data, relying on a simple linear additive heuristic instead.
October 12, 2026 at 3:44 PM
One should use the data to infer whether someone will benefit from the treatment, be harmed by it, or be unaffected. These are counterfactual notions! Benefit = better because of action. By placing a value on each counterfactual type, one can compute the expected benefit of acting vs. not acting.

Observation is an address, but it cannot establish the counterfactual alone. We do have imperfect interventions: remove a memory, alter a prompt, swap the model, rerun from the same state, then compare what changes. The hard part is preserving enough state that only the touched variable moved.

They require two things: the relevant organization must survive structure-preserving relabeling, and it must appear in counterfactual responses among mutually constraining variables. Lookup tables and replayed traces fail those tests. A physically organized computational mechanism can pass.

That's not a fact tho is it...it's just a biased doppelganger economic forecast that has been debunked many times

Nobody has a clue how much Brexit has "cost" as it would always be counterfactual

If Brexit has "cost" the UK 150 bn a year why hasn't EU membership "cost" Germany 200 bn per year?

So, conditional on the present situation then.

But do I take it from this that, for you, a 'hypothetical' is a counterfactual-conditioned prediction whereas a 'prediction' is one where, if anything is conditioned on, it's actual?
