I had a friend as a kid whose parents emigrated from Yugoslavia (it was 80s, I was at most 10, so don’t know if Serbian, Croatian, etc). Mom did the same thing, had a nice little salon in their basement.

This is what happens when countries pretend that one language is three languages. Serbian, Croatian, and Montenegran are three dialects of the same language. Linguists agree. Unlike Russian, Ukrainian, & Belarusian, which are separate languages.

Reminds me of the time when I played the Serbian tapes in the Croatian programme shortly after they split the service. They were numbered and written the same and it was pre 4am buck in the canteen so how could I have known?

I'm of Serbian descent and years ago what playing hoops with a Croatian guy and dished to him behind the back near the hoop. He asked me after the game how I knew to pass and I said "When a Serb aims at a Croat, best not miss"

We later drank ourselves into a stupor and laughed about it. We won.

Yes I did. I can read serbian cyrillic with no problems. It's easy since serbian and croatian are 95% the same language. Therefore, I can read ukrainian cyrillic too, but I do have problems with understanding the words since there a lot more difference between languages.

Croatians sometimes do it too.
