Fusiform rust, caused by the fungus Cronartium quercuum f. sp. fusiforme, is a disease of pines especially loblolly & slash. It forms spindle-shaped galls on branches/trunks that can cause branch deformities, poor vigor & kill young trees. Bright orange powdery spores appear in spring #Rust #Fungi 🧪

Fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum) gall on longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) releasing aesciospores. These spores will infect young oak leaves, which will eventually release basidiospores, which can infect pines.

An update: as the spores were not right for Cronartium, this was submitted to the Norfolk Fungus Study Group DNA team. It gave a good sequence… of Hypomyces chrysospermus, an ascomycete that parasitises boletes. How it got on the acorn cup (no boletes visible nearby) remains a mystery.

This has me confused. At the weekend I found an acorn cup that appeared to be covered in a rust fungus. I remembered that there is a scarce rust that does this, Cronatium quercuum, so was quite pleased. However, whilst the orange is indeed spores, they are not the right shape for Cronartium...

Cronartium harknessii - Western Pine Gall Rust
This one is theoretically indistinguishable to the naked eye from C. quercuum in states/provinces where their ranges overlap but C. quercuum would require oaks to be present in order to spread to the pines. This one can go pine to pine.

There's a huge plains area that's just... Invasive weeds, buckthorn, and honeysuckle. Only a few dog strangling vine around tho

Native plants include sumac (fungus of some kind and dying), poplars (Entoleuca'd and dying), pines (Cronartium and dying). It's pathetic lol

Rust & leaf blotch are not confused only on #wheat when exposed to the sun. Here #Cronartium flaccinum (#rust) on #Paeonia sp., also pathogen of pine. Could be confused with #Dichocladosporium chlorocephalum, but aecia on the lower side of the leaf are decisive for the diagnostic

Two year ago today I painted Pinyon pine needle rust (Cronartium ribicola) on golden current (Ribes aureum).

The painting shows a green golden current leaf, with round yellow lesions. Where the lesions are bordered by a leaf vein, they have a flat edge ending at the vein. Concentric circles of orange dots within the yellow lesions represent the rust fungus sporulating structures.
