It should be called Cronartium pini, as Cronartium flaccidum and Peridermium pini were shown to be two forms of the same species : doi.org/10.1016/j.fu...

And barely cultivated at all in the US, since a farming ban in the early 1900s. That’s because White pine blister rust (Cronartium ribicola) is a fungus that cycles between currants and white pines (Pinus) as a host, and was considered a serious threat to US logging.

Finally it’s #fungifriday! Fusiform rust (Cronartium quercuum) that I found on my walk. We finally got rain, so hoping for more #fungifriends tomorrow.

An update: as the spores were not right for Cronartium, this was submitted to the Norfolk Fungus Study Group DNA team. It gave a good sequence… of Hypomyces chrysospermus, an ascomycete that parasitises boletes. How it got on the acorn cup (no boletes visible nearby) remains a mystery.
This has me confused. At the weekend I found an acorn cup that appeared to be covered in a rust fungus. I remembered that there is a scarce rust that does this, Cronatium quercuum, so was quite pleased. However, whilst the orange is indeed spores, they are not the right shape for Cronartium...

🌿The life cycle of fungi can be very complex

Take non-EU Cronartium spp.: these fungi complete their cycle either on Pinus spp. or on Pinus spp. and dicotyledonous plants.

We selected three extreme cases, being fast insertion/fast deletion/stable genome (Cronartium ribicola), slow insertion/slow deletion/stable genome (Puccinia coronata), and fast insertion/slow deletion/obese genome (Austropuccinia psidii), typical of eukaryotic genome dynamics.

Cronartium harknessii - Western Pine Gall Rust
This one is theoretically indistinguishable to the naked eye from C. quercuum in states/provinces where their ranges overlap but C. quercuum would require oaks to be present in order to spread to the pines. This one can go pine to pine.
