Overview of Agriculture Canada's Annual Crop Inventory map of the Yukon Territory. Pockets of agriculture supporting local economies can be found as far north as Dawson City. Zoom-in on where the Takhini and Yukon Rivers converge. Located just north of Whitehorse, this area has the greatest density of agriculture found in Yukon. In the map fields of haskap berries, shown in bright red, pop out to the viewer. Also seen are two fallow fields (fields not active this season) in orange. In a paler shade of gold/orange and the most numerous Ag class in the Territory is our Pasture/Forage class. Other notable classes are in the upper right of the image with shades of greenish-yellows which represent individually oats, barley, and canola. Keen eyed viewers will also see in that same area a pink field (potatoes), greyish (spring wheat), and brown (peas). A photo of an agricultural field in near the Yukon River north of Whitehorse. It is a large flat clearing, with oats growing in the foreground and along the field edges with barley planted in the middle of the field.

I may be stuck at YYZ, but that doesn’t mean I can’t push through a quality control check of the 2024 Annual Crop Inventory map of Saskatchewan!

Finally done, hopefully out to the public soon.

SNEAK PEAK: AgriCarta (our latest generation of AAFC classification system), completed its first #cropmap24 province this season, Prince Edward Island.

I'll review PEI, then we will run a final accuracy assessment & create some metadata before we make it available to the public. #CdnAg #opendata

An example of why quality control checks are useful.

Our classifier decided to call almost every field near Cormack, NL as potato🤷‍♂️

Are there potato fields there? Yes.
Was there that many in 2024? No.

How do I know?
A #cropmap24 ground team was there
#Redo

#EarthObservation #CdnAg #SkyAg #mapping
2024 failed Annual Crop Inventory attempt to classify fields near Cormack, Newfoundland. The majority of fields were classed as potato when that was not the case. #cropmap24 observation points collected by a survey team in July 2024. These were used to help understand the problem with the failed map classification.

On the way to Haines Junction the Kluane Mountain Range rises in to the sky.
Just before you get to town there is a recent agricultural development. One farm in this area might have the most picturesque laneways I have seen.📸 #cropmap24 #Yukon #CdnAg

Between Carcross & Tagish next to Crag Lake there is a farm run by the local First Nation. Here they have started construction on a greenhouse (concrete base & ventilation pipes visible). It will grow veggies for the local population. They also have some nice forages too. #cropmap24 #Yukon #CdnAg

Happy #GISday to those out there who celebrate.

As a gift, our classification system (AgriCarta) gave me our #cropmap24 of Nova Scotia to review.

Not only that but New Brunswick & Newfoundland are now waiting in the Quality Control queue as well.

Thanks? I guess. 😂 #NoRest

Keen observers of our work will note that our periwinkle-ish coloured Class 130 (Too Wet to Seed) will make an appearance this year for fields south and west of London.

#CropMap24 #CdnAg #OntAg
Image of the 2024 Annual Crop Inventory of Ontario by Agriculture Canada. Zoom-in of the 2024 Annual Crop Inventory map of Ontario. Zoomed in to an area with the city of London (dark pink, upper right), St. Thomas (dark pink, lower right), Strathroy (dark pink, upper left), and Glencoe (dark pink, lower left). The map shows what was grown in each field in 2024 (light yellow = corn, dark gold = soybean, etc...), along with other land cover features (green = deciduous trees, blue = water). Two areas in the map are circled, with arrows from a large number '130' pointed towards them. These are highlighting fields where Class 130 (Too Wet to Seed) was classified by the Crop Inventory algorithms. In this situation excess spring rainfalls made it impossible for farmers to successfully grow a crop in those fields in 2024.

Checking our 2024 Quebec Crop Inventory Map & I noticed a colour I don't see often

The grey represents a field of quinoa grown outside the town of Alma, QC

Not too often I see that grown outside of the Prairies

Quinoa photo from a 2018 SK tour I did.
A piece of the 2024 Annual Crop Inventory map of Quebec. The red arrow on the image is pointing to a light grey-ish field in the image. This colour represents quinoa in the map colour table. The town of Alma is to the right, shown in dark pink. Here's photo of a field of quinoa I took while getting a tour of it in Saskatchewan in 2018. A very interesting an unique crop it comes in a variety of colours. This particular field was of the golden variety I believe.

Day 1 of #cropmap24 data collection in #Yukon, sees us go north following the Yukon River up to Minto (almost 3 hours north of Whitehorse) observing agriculture pockets along the way.

If time allows we'll also visit the north shore of the Takhini River, a dense area for Ag in the Territory. #CdnAg

Made it to North Bay.
☀️ + warmth = Lots of activity in the fields today.

Spotted lots of crops including canola, oats, and a few fields of this crop (closeup of an individual plant). Answer in the ALT text! 😁

A green tractor is hauling a flatbed trailer stacked with over 10 large round bales of hay. It is leaving the farm and starting to make its journey down a gravel road A field of flowering canola (tiny yellow flowers) east of Verner, Ontario. A field of ripening oats, golden in colour, with a line of solar plans in the background. Found in Sturgeon Falls, Ontario. This mystery crop is buckwheat! A small plant with numerous tiny white flowers, green leaves, and red stem. Its popularity has declined over the years, so it’s becoming rare to find.

🚨#cropmap24 UPDATE: 🚨

Still waiting to access 2024 Alberta Crop Insurance data. (lawyers still lawyer-ing) 🙃

We have completed everything we can (SK & BC are 95% done, AB 0%). We will finish these provinces once we get the ground data.

On to Crop Inventory R&D testing!
picture of me (or maybe SpongeBob) patiently waiting in a diner with a steaming cup of coffee keeping him company. Map showing Alberta (blue hatches). To the far right is the part of the 2024 Annual Crop Inventory of Saskatchewan that is completed so far. In between are red boxes that represent the pieces of SK that overlap with AB and require data from both provinces to complete accurately. This situation is the same on the British Columbia border, but is not shown here.

Image showing Agriculture Canada's 2024 Annual Crop Inventory for the agricultural regions of Quebec. In addition to mapping what was grown in each field by satellite imagery, we also include the surrounding landcovers (forest, water, urban, etc...) so that people can see how things change over time. Zoom-in of the agricultural area surrounding Lac Saint-Jean, QC. Reds indicate fields of berries, mainly blueberry with some cranberries in a slightly lighter shade. Purple represents wetlands, with dark purple indicating where peat extraction is occuring. Cyan are showing fields of buckwheat. The various shades of yellow/gold fields are showing crops like corn, soy, small grain cereals (oats, barley), forages and pasture lands. In southern Quebec long narrow fields of corn (pale yellow) and soybean (dark gold) dominate the area. However three of the central Monteregian Hills (left to right: Mont Saint-Hillaire, Mont Rougemont, Mont Yamaska) covered in deciduous forests pop up from the landscape. At the base of two of these hills you will find numerous apple orchards (coral pink).
