We have finally released our 2024 ACI maps for Alberta & Saskatchewan. (BC coming out tomorrow)

🚨#cropmap24 UPDATE: 🚨

Still waiting to access 2024 Alberta Crop Insurance data. (lawyers still lawyer-ing) 🙃

We have completed everything we can (SK & BC are 95% done, AB 0%). We will finish these provinces once we get the ground data.

On to Crop Inventory R&D testing!

Overview of Agriculture Canada's Annual Crop Inventory map of the Yukon Territory. Pockets of agriculture supporting local economies can be found as far north as Dawson City. Zoom-in on where the Takhini and Yukon Rivers converge. Located just north of Whitehorse, this area has the greatest density of agriculture found in Yukon. In the map fields of haskap berries, shown in bright red, pop out to the viewer. Also seen are two fallow fields (fields not active this season) in orange. In a paler shade of gold/orange and the most numerous Ag class in the Territory is our Pasture/Forage class. Other notable classes are in the upper right of the image with shades of greenish-yellows which represent individually oats, barley, and canola. Keen eyed viewers will also see in that same area a pink field (potatoes), greyish (spring wheat), and brown (peas). A photo of an agricultural field in near the Yukon River north of Whitehorse. The 2024 Annual Crop Inventory map of Manitoba is finished.

Note: Class 130 (Too Wet to Seed) is found in the Interlake and Parkland regions of the province. Due to excessive spring rainfall it wasn't possible for farmers to plant crops. #CdnAg #WestCdnAg #CropMap24

Keen observers of our work will note that our periwinkle-ish coloured Class 130 (Too Wet to Seed) will make an appearance this year for fields south and west of London.

In addition to mapping what was grown in each field by satellite imagery, we also include the surrounding landcovers (forest, water, urban, etc...) so that people can see how things change over time. Zoom-in of the agricultural area surrounding Lac Saint-Jean, QC. Reds indicate fields of berries, mainly blueberry with some cranberries in a slightly lighter shade. Purple represents wetlands, with dark purple indicating where peat extraction is occuring. Cyan are showing fields of buckwheat. The various shades of yellow/gold fields are showing crops like corn, soy, small grain cereals (oats, barley), forages and pasture lands. In southern Quebec long narrow fields of corn (pale yellow) and soybean (dark gold) dominate the area. However three of the central Monteregian Hills (left to right: Mont Saint-Hillaire, Mont Rougemont, Mont Yamaska) covered in deciduous forests pop up from the landscape. At the base of two of these hills you will find numerous apple orchards (coral pink).

Checking our 2024 Quebec Crop Inventory Map & I noticed a colour I don't see often

The grey represents a field of quinoa grown outside the town of Alma, QC

Not too often I see that grown outside of the Prairies

The town of Alma is to the right, shown in dark pink. Here's photo of a field of quinoa I took while getting a tour of it in Saskatchewan in 2018. A very interesting an unique crop it comes in a variety of colours. This particular field was of the golden variety I believe.

An example of why quality control checks are useful.

Our classifier decided to call almost every field near Cormack, NL as potato🤷‍♂️

Are there potato fields there? Yes.
Was there that many in 2024? No.

How do I know?
A #cropmap24 ground team was there

2024 failed Annual Crop Inventory attempt to classify fields near Cormack, Newfoundland. The majority of fields were classed as potato when that was not the case. #cropmap24 observation points collected by a survey team in July 2024. These were used to help understand the problem with the failed map classification.

Over past 20+ years, AAFC has developed a strong expertise in agricultural mapping at a national scale using optical and SAR sensors. #Sentinel1C will continue this legacy!!

To the east of Tagish along the north shore of Little Attlin Lake there is a large forage producer (I stopped counting at 100 round bales). In addition we saw a plot of oats, plus some exposed black soils which were still visible post veggie harvest. #cropmap24 #Yukon #CdnAg

Between Carcross & Tagish next to Crag Lake there is a farm run by the local First Nation. Here they have started construction on a greenhouse (concrete base & ventilation pipes visible). It will grow veggies for the local population. They also have some nice forages too. #cropmap24 #Yukon #CdnAg

The recent rainfall here in Whitehorse has meant the surrounding higher elevations are snow covered again.

Land in that Ag development near Haines Junction are in various states. Some fields are cleared & growing oats, some are used for pasture.
While clearing is still happening in some fields, others that were cleared look to have been left to be taken back by weeds and shrubs. #cropmap24 #Yukon #CdnAg
