I should probably just do a really nice controller driven version of DCSS haha.

More bug fixing for Look Outside tonight. Tune in here for Boring Debugging Sesh (and maybe I continue my DCSS run later, too?)

I feel a lot of people's hate for roguelikes come from only playing modern interpretations that have little to offer besides victory / defeat.

Even Hades relies on narrative & meta progression to make "bad RNG" tolerable. Meanwhile, it's legit fun to die in weird ways in Caves of Cud, ToME4 or DCSS

i'm so hooked on dcss right now, all thanks to i think @tiny.baby mentioning it a few times recently-ish. thousands of dollars of games in my steam library and i'm just playing a free roguelike in my browser instead

Since people are asking for traditional roguelike recommendations, here's mine:
-Dungeons of Dredmor: lighthearted intro to the genre
-One Way Heroics: Also a lighthearted intro but from Japan
-DCSS: Free, complex & beginner friendly
-ToME: My favorite, has great combat, secrets & difficulty options

me and a friend have been putting jera through DCSS runs. hence the title of conjurer

the DF, Caves of Qud, and CDDA S tier
Isaac, Nethack, DCSS A tier
Hades B tier
you ask me to make a roguelike game tier list and you'll be dissappointed to know that im gonna put caves of Qud in S tier and none of your favorites will reach A tier

The most common modern usage: 'roguelite' emphasizes permanent upgrades via metaprogression, while 'roguelike' still tends to focus on progression via knowledge (be it the arcane workings of Noita or complex strategy of Slice & Dice).

I use 'Traditional Roguelike' for ADOM/DCSS/Dredmor/etc.

"poison swamp that deletes your save" is just a DCSS Lair sub-branch

this is how more people learn of old-school ASCII rogue games (Nethack, DCSS, ADOM, Cogmind, etc)

i should probably practice playing mahjong instead of playing dcss and getting 5 floors in before beefing it

Gnolls are great
Gnolls are chill
Gnolls gain experience in every skill
Decent at everything
Not very tough
Shouldn't have tried to fight Crazy Yiuf.
