It’s Dungeonquest night.

Tonight's virtual tabletop session: We're playing the original 1985 version of Drakborgen, the Swedish tabletop game that got localized by Games Workshop as DungeonQuest.

Between our many hours of playing DungeonQuest and a compiled, spotty working knowledge of Swedish, we feel pretty at home.

Returned home from a date night with my partner to find our 12yo and 16yo deep into their third game of DungeonQuest. #ProudPapa

Expansion set for DungeonQuest boardgame: Catacombs. What a great fun! Game is bit unbalanced and and randomness it’s virtue… super deadly too: all players usually dead before reaching the dragons treasure. Heh, this game has special place in my heart.

Another night of Dungeonquest

Played some oldschool dungeon crawling - some traps in this maze still feel so unfair… But two heros out of three that entered the dragons lair somehow managed to get out with loot before sundown.

Family game of DungeonQuest

13yo died to razorwings in 3 turns

Wife found a 4000 gp diamond in the catacombs and then also died to razorwings

16yo escaped with 100 gp

I found 170 gp but died to a trap while trying to find a path to an exit

We actually have copies of our elusive dungeon crawl game in stock at the moment! Not likely to last long...

My mum and dad bringing 1st Edition Space Hulk and DungeonQuest home one day. Pretty much hooked us all in, and they soon picked up Advanced HeroQuest and Blood Bowl. Then came issues of White Dwarf, and the much anticipated trips to the Dudley and Merry Hill Games Workshop stores every fortnight.
Happy 50th Birthday to Games Workshop! 💀🎉

Lovely retrospective in White Dwarf including staff memories & the fun detail behind the first ever store gaming table!

What's your earliest memory of GW?

Here are two of mine - my first miniature and my first ticket to Games Day from ~20 years ago! :-)

Dungeon delving at the midnight hour-ish beneath Dragonfire Castle... all good so far for both of us until a Death Warrior presents itself!

ok THIS box set I can finish. Mini 1 of 4 of my favorite Dungeonquest. Long overdue.

DungeonQuest is great

I got my start in miniature painting largely through GW board games: these guys are from the DungeonQuest expansion Heroes for DungeonQuest which repurposed popular figures from their other ranges as fodder for the meat-grinder that was Dragonfire Castle

A new article has gone up on my Scanline Artifacts site! Join me as I gush about and take you on a tour of one of my favourite RPG-ey board games that has a Tabletop Simulator implementation: the 1987 Games Workshop edition of DungeonQuest!

Enjoy. 💜

7. DungeonQuest. An almost entirely random board game that I regularly extol the virtues of to looks of abject horror. It's all about the entertainment value of watching your bold heroes die in any number of brutal ways

After years of playing my favorite game Dungeonquest and countless moments during playing thinking "I should paint these" I have finally, you guessed it, painted these!

Ah, and there's the diorama on the back that I loved so much. My parents had picked up Space Hulk that year, which, along with DungeonQuest, was our gateway into the hobby.

I'd watch them play, with my dad usually taking the role of the marines and mum as the genestealers.

Oh man, this brought back some memories. Thanks @amalgamash.bsky.social for this grim reminder of what make #dungeonquest one of the most unusual games of all time. If you've never played it, track it down and dive right in.

No fear, it doesn't usually take too long to play.

A good read for English speakers who are interested in learning more about our surprisingly deep and varied tabletop gaming culture which has given rise to some fascinating offshoots from Dungeonquest to Tales from the loop and Vaesen.
Bayt al Azif issue 6 also includes an overview of Call of Cthulhu in Swedish from Eloso förlag by their Cthulhu creative lead Adrian Madden @adrian-oal.bsky.social

Eloso didn't merely translate, they localized to 1920s Sweden as "Call of Cthulhu Sverige".
