In April 2025, Samsung introduced Vision AI sets with features called Pet Care and Family Care, which could detect dog barks or baby cries in an empty room and send alerts to owners' phones. The company stated these features only worked when the TV was turned off. However, on October 23, 2026, a reverse engineer known as log4j shared findings suggesting Samsung TVs send data about barks, cries, sensor readings, and camera streaming duration to Samsung servers. The researcher discovered this through unpatched security flaws that allowed full control of the TV, revealing sound-classification models, screen capture logs, and cross-device advertising IDs. Samsung's automatic content recognition (ACR) system, which samples screen content twice per second, has been documented for years, but the new claims involve potential audio data collection. The researcher alleges that even when ACR is turned off, data might still be transmitted. Samsung has disputed the claims, stating that viewing-recognition features are off by default and require opt-in, but have not addressed the microphone data. Texas settled with Samsung over ACR data collection without admitting wrongdoing, agreeing to require express consent for data collection. The business model of TV manufacturers increasingly relies on ad revenue, with Samsung's free ad-supported TV Plus service reaching 100 million users. The controversy highlights the tension between consumer privacy and the data-driven advertising business model, with regulators focusing on screen data but not yet addressing audio data collection. Independent verification remains limited, with only one test showing the microphone opens briefly, suggesting not continuous recording. The researcher was banned by OpenAI for 'cyber abuse' while using tools for reverse engineering, raising questions about how security research is treated by AI platforms. The core issue remains whether Samsung's on-device processing of audio data also transmits summaries to advertisers, potentially without user awareness.

Council members asked why the CSRP's first-year report showed only nine formal referrals (four to detox, four to MOUD, one to harm reduction) across roughly 1,700 enrollees and 30,000 transactions; DOHMH said the pilot undercounted informal care connections and will improve data collection and classification.

A comprehensive study conducted by Northeastern University has uncovered significant privacy concerns related to automatic content recognition (ACR) technology in U.S. smart TVs. The research, which analyzed 12 smart TVs from 10 manufacturers representing 95% of the U.S. smart TV market, found that 82% of U.S. households own smart TVs capable of taking screen snapshots and reporting them back to content recognition providers. The study measured where this data goes and whether turning off the feature actually stops data collection. Researchers discovered that ACR technology is active during antenna broadcasts on every TV tested, but does not track Netflix or YouTube content, which aligns with publicly reported agreements. However, Tubi, a free ad-supported streaming service, was tracked on Tizen OS and Google TV. Most operating systems also tracked their own built-in streaming services, with exceptions including Fire TV OS and Google TV on Sony. The study found that opting out of ACR does not always work as intended: Samsung's Tizen OS continued to send ACR traffic after opting out in 41 of 60 antenna runs, and Vizio's SmartCast OS sent ACR-pattern traffic even when the TV was idle on its home screen. The research also revealed that VIDAA OS sends unencrypted ACR data containing permanent device IDs, time zones, app names, input sources, and content categories, exposing sensitive information to anyone on the network path. Additionally, Vizio's WatchFree+ streaming service reveals program titles through unencrypted DNS queries and SNI, which cannot be turned off. The study concludes that ACR should be fully disabled when users opt out, and recommends that manufacturers authenticate and encrypt all ACR traffic, list all inputs ACR monitors in privacy policies, and stop embedding viewing data in web addresses. The researchers also provided a blocklist for users to prevent ACR data collection on systems where opting out doesn't work.
