i don’t think they are. As José van Dijck pointed out in 2014, dataism — the belief that data is both neutral & superior to other forms of “human” knowledge — has become pervasive, in academia and civil society, nor just SV. Faith in LLMs is a consequence of dataism. This is an ideological problem.

Me, at every school staff meeting.

Datafication is a hallmark of supremacist thinking.
Does all the tracking produce "enough meaningful health benefit to justify the cost, effort, and potential for anxiety"❓

Nah‼️

"We should measure success in healthier, happier lives – not more data, more alerts, or more perfect scores."

Chill.

Ethnography is the why.

In age of datafication we need ethnography more.

For #GLAM its more than just how many attend it's what are they getting.

(Or, as Michael Kimmelman said: "The question should not be how many people visit museums but how valuable are their visits.")

While this report is useful, Hechinger's analysis never mentions AI's emergence as privatization through datafication with standardized testing. Why? Look at the big tech money, which wants us to think AI is the only problem: hechingerreport.org/supporters/

When, How and Why to Abandon the Internet
On Oct. 6, the Privacy Center at Georgetown Law hosted Life After Data: The Conference on De-datafication, which asked participants to imagine a future in which digital data is no longer the currency that mediates our social, economic and political lives — and how we might get there. One provocation on the program asked whether it might make sense, now or someday, to abandon the internet itself. Tech Policy Press put that question to its readers, inviting two-minute voice memos in response. In this episode, produced by **Rebecca Rand** , you’ll hear from author and media theorist **Douglas Rushkoff** ; Craig Newmark Center for Journalism Ethics and Security at Columbia Journalism School director **Anika Collier Navaroli** ; **Bridget Todd** , author and host of iHeartRadio’s “There Are No Girls on the Internet”; **Konstantinos Komaitis** , resident senior fellow at the Atlantic Council; **Caddie Alford** , associate professor of rhetoric at Virginia Commonwealth University, who shared her students’ responses; Janet Vertesi, associate professor of sociology at Princeton; **Alice Marwick** , director of research at Data & Society; **Liz Orembo** of Research ICT Africa; **Robin Berjon** of the Modal Foundation; and **B Cavello** , director of emerging technologies at the Aspen Institute.

One thing that wasn’t discussed directly was our own institutions—our universities—and their complicity in enabling the datafication of everything and promoting these technologies that get turned on our students, our faculty, and our communities.

Maybe we need another day, just on this.
