Northwest Ontario Regions to Adopt Permanent Daylight Saving Time
Ontario's northwest regions, including communities such as Timmins, Sudbury, and Sault Ste. Marie, are set to transition to permanent daylight saving time following a consensus among municipalities, First Nations, and businesses. Indigenous Affairs Minister Greg Rickford announced the decision, citing overwhelming support from local governments and stakeholders. The move aims to align the region's time zone with the growing preference for extended daylight hours, particularly in the northern areas where daylight hours vary significantly throughout the year. The announcement comes as part of broader discussions on time zone adjustments across Canada, though this specific change applies only to the northwest region of Ontario. The decision follows a review of community feedback and economic considerations, with officials emphasizing the benefits for tourism, outdoor activities, and local businesses that rely on daylight hours. The change is expected to take effect in the near future, though an exact date has not yet been confirmed. This shift marks a significant step in Ontario's approach to time management, reflecting the unique needs of northern communities. The government has stated that the decision was made after careful consideration of the region's geographical and cultural context, ensuring that the change will positively impact residents and visitors alike. The move also aligns with similar discussions in other parts of Canada, where communities have sought to eliminate the biannual clock changes that disrupt daily routines. While the rest of Ontario continues to observe standard time and daylight saving time, the northwest region will now operate on a permanent daylight schedule, potentially setting a precedent for other regions considering similar adjustments.

Alberta's permanent daylight time shift impacts NHL game schedules

Alberta's permanent daylight time shift impacts NHL game schedules
The Canadian Press reports that Alberta's decision to adopt permanent daylight time, a move also embraced by British Columbia and Manitoba, is causing significant adjustments to NHL game schedules for teams in Western Canada. The Calgary Flames will have eight games starting at 9 p.m., including two at the Saddledome, while Edmonton's Oilers will have seven 9 p.m. games. Flames captain Mikael Backlund noted that professional athletes must adapt to these changes, mentioning the use of caffeine to stay alert. Flames forward Ryan Strome highlighted the family impact, as his children are too young to attend late-night games, making his tickets available for free on those nights. Flames president Robert Hayes acknowledged the schedule changes are out of their control, emphasizing they must focus on what they can manage. The shift has also affected the Winnipeg Jets, with 12 home games adjusted to start an hour later, though none later than 7:30 p.m. local time. Jets players like Trent Frederic are adjusting their sleep routines, with Frederic planning to go to bed later the night before games and taking naps to manage fatigue. Vancouver Canucks winger Brendan Gallagher noted the novelty of the schedule changes, stating they've never experienced such adjustments before but will adapt. The NHL's schedule changes reflect broader provincial decisions to eliminate seasonal clock changes, with Alberta, BC, and Manitoba now permanently observing daylight saving time. This decision has created a variety of game start times across Western Canada, with Calgary seeing eight afternoon games starting at 2:30 p.m. or earlier compared to five in the previous season. Hayes expressed optimism about the increased afternoon games for families, while acknowledging the challenges of late-night games for fans and players. The article notes that the NHL's schedule is driven by broadcast rightsholders, making these time adjustments necessary to accommodate the provinces' new time policies. The changes are part of a larger trend in Canada, with Manitoba declaring its permanent daylight time on September 17, the same day NHL training camps began. The article concludes by noting that while the schedule changes present challenges, the focus remains on the game itself, with players and fans adapting to the new reality.

Don’t forget that it’s un-Australian to set your clocks forward early and just go to bed. We all have to stay up and get drunk and blazed and wind them forward together at the official time. It’s a nation-building exercise, for those who celebrate.

Got an idea #auspol! Love lighter evenings, saving daylight saves us all energy, but boarder towns must find it so irritating. Could we in Eastern states compromise by all adopting 1/2 hr DST all year round & stop clock changes? Then in summer Eastern states would also align with SA. #daylightsaving

I got a "better idea" than having south east #Queensland joining #NewSouthWales and the rest of eastern Australia and adopting #daylightsaving.

That is - that it's SCRAPPED altogether in Australia. It sucks, it's unnecessary.

DS apparently was invented by Freemasons, who wanted to "control time".
How daylight saving leaves one Australian border town operating on two different clocks
Border towns Tweed Heads and Coolangatta have a unique relationship to daylight saving: One observes the time change. The other doesn't.
