if you’re 25–30 and your circle isn’t discussing:

- debuggers
- rust semantics
- sun microsystems
- minor league baseball

then you need to leave. your network is your net worth

I understand the reasoning here, but banning AI contributions will soon become as ridiculous as banning IDEs and debuggers. Can you write great code without IDEs and debuggers? Absolutely! Should a professional environment ban them? Absolutely not.
For years we have been overwhelmed by the volume of code contributions we have to review, especially from new contributors.

AI has made the problem much worse.

That's why we are taking steps to reduce the burden on maintainers while still welcoming new contributors:

Godot is growing fast, so here is how we are dealing with the huge increase in contributions.

I made a very abridged talk on how debuggers work as a pre-conference video for Pure Virtual C++, which is happening on the 30th April!

my favorite conference talk was an old guy talking about bash debuggers and then afterwards I caught him arguing with some other old guys talking about the heyday of Perl

Ever set a breakpoint and wondered how it actually works? 🔍

In “How Debuggers Work,” @tartanllama.xyz explains how debuggers step through code, inspect memory, and interact with running programs. Watch the talk on GOTO's YouTube Channel or click below:

. o O (what if the "async/await in native languages makes debuggers and call stacks useless" problem is actually a "debug tooling is bad" problem)
November 23, 2024 at 7:25 AM
Debuggers are more important now than ever before because after you vibe code your shit you're probably gonna want to step through it line by line to see what it's actually doing

Debuggers are faster ways of acquiring knowledge than reading code

People need rubber duck debuggers. And rubber duck coauthors.
The end of this quote gets at why I think gen ai is being used in many cases: technology has separated us from our communities, and people are too alienated to reach out and ask a friend or coworker to collaborate.
This anonymous quote really shocked me—all the tasks listed here are like the absolute essence of what writing is. If you hired a person to choose words and draft scenes for you, you would have to pay them as a ghost writer. The fact that you reviewed it afterward does not mean you wrote it!

11. stop fucking tracing every function call, that's what debuggers are for.
