The satellite image of MBS's palace reminded me of one of the most interesting facts I have read while working on my current book. The water table in Arabia has sunk from about 6m below ground in prehistoric times to 70m today. (Peter Magee, The Archaeology of Prehistoric Arabia)

Pour le moment personne n’en parle, mais au regard de l’évolution des choses, et de l’abondance de l’électricité bas carbone dans ce pays, il va falloir qu’on réfléchisse sérieusement à des usines de desalinisation d’eau de mer.

Desalination for drinking water is surprisingly affordable. Desalination for agriculture probably doesn't make a ton of economic sense apart from some high-value crops.

We are an island... we should be using desalinisation. Now reclaimed seawater tastes terrible...
But if we *have* to have data centres (and I am not convinced we do)... THEY can get desalinated water...

The US doesn’t seem to understand how many targets there are for Iran in the Gulf.
Attacking the desalination plant in Iran is monstrous in itself as so many people depend on them, but it also opens up the way for Iran to target the Gulf’s desalination plants, which would also be monstrous

While countries outside of the gulf are concerned about oil, the people in the middle east are concerned about water.
Desalinisation plants are being destroyed which can make survival pretty difficult in such an arid region.
