#DigitalFriday
Fascinating read, tagging for this week’s #DigitalFriday
Wikipedia editors trying to fend off the onslaught of AI crap have crowdsourced some telltale signs of LLM-generated writing; it might be handy for editors and proofreaders generally. Thanks to @ellenrykers.com for pointing me to it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiped...

This looks cool, but I'm especially posting for @hpsvanessa.bsky.social and her regular #DigitalFriday appeal! 🗃️

On the Wayback Machine homepage there are two sections researchers ought to know about web.archive.org

1. "Save Page Now".
2. "Tools". there are extensions for browsers that make it easy for you to check whether a page has been archived, and save any page that hasn't yet with a click of a button.
Can't be stressed enough: what's on the web isn't permanent.

Always download your own copies. Use Zotero from @digitalscholar.bsky.social to grab webpages, PDFs, etc. Mirror webpages with the WaybackMachine from @archive.org

Amazing #DigitalFriday resource!
Big news! The digital edition of Alice Thornton's four Books is now complete and online. There are 1,019 pages (c. 270,000 words) of Thornton’s life-writings in both modernised and semi-diplomatic versions and they are fully searchable.

in slightly less serious #DigitalFriday news, if you're tired of the udm=14 workaround it seems like swearing in your google search automatically removes the unwanted "AI summary" (HT @metafilter.bsky.social ) www.tumblr.com/andthenthere...

My only #DigitalFriday find this week is this intriguing thread of wiki pages.
bsky.app/profile/jlph...
For reasons, I am starting a thread of Canadian historians with Wikipedia pages. (The reasons are because I just think that's neat.)
Sarah Carter, historian of Indigenous history focusing on women, celebrated scholar in women's history, wrote Importance of Being Monogamous:

Banger of a #DigitalFriday hint here!
This is both an incredibly niche thing but I think it should be more of a thing. Caffè Nero subscribes to the British Newspaper Archive so it’s all free on their wifi. There. I said it.

Some responses to this post highlighting candidates for #DigitalFriday
Someone needs to do a Google Maps, but for the past. For example, typing in "London to York" but you can select a period e.g. 1450s, and it would give you the likeliest route. That'd be great.

Just recommended this great resource to my students and realised I haven't mentioned it on here for a while. Dionysus was a journal focused on alcohol and literature which is now available for free thanks to the generosity of its original editors: teaching.shu.ac.uk/ds/sle/Diony...

I've just learned about kumu.io, and I am really liking it! Browser-based, clear documentation, intuitive UI, easy annotation and metrics. A quick google turned up an easy way of doing dynamic time slices. Here is an example with the networks in Venetian spy reports🕵️ #digitalhumanities #dh 🗃️

Important #DigitalFriday update, it's not just costa that has free access to the BNA! (100% not a Weatherspoons endorsement, many other venues are available)
I suspected any "_The Cloud" wifi would be able to access the British Newspaper Archive for free, so found my nearest location using wigle.net (a Wetherspoons) and I was correct!

Today @dairinstitute.bsky.social is releasing the Luddite Lab Resource Hub. The hub hosts case studies, resources, and political education for unions, labor organizations, and workers who want to fight “AI” and automation at work. labor.dair-institute.org
