A new biting midge genus Ardernomyia (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from New Zealand and Southwestern Australia
The new genus Ardernomyia, with one new species in New Zealand and seven new species in the southwestern corner of Western Australia, is described, illustrated and discussed. Keys to the males and females of the eight species are provided. The new genus belongs to the Monohelea complex and forms the sister group to (Monohelea Kieffer + Heterohelea Clastrier) + (Downeshelea Wirth & Grogan + Allohelea Kieffer). Zoogeographic patterns among the related genera suggest southern hemisphere diversification but further intrageneric phylogenetic resolution is needed of these other genera to provide specific resolution. A phylogeny based solely on male genitalic differences indicates that the single species from New Zealand is the sister group to the remaining seven species, all from Western Australia. The Australian species are resolved other than a polychotomy between three of them. The immatures, almost certainly aquatic or semiaquatic, are unknown. Strikingly, seven of the new Australian species are present at a single site, with two of these also found further north. The limited region is a known biodiversity hotspot otherwise and it seems certain that further species will be discovered. Four unassociated and unnamed species of females are described and their possible identification is discussed. A list of other genera collected in Western Australia is provided and discussed, further indicating the need for further sampling of this interesting family.

#diptera #ElkeDagEenInsect

Ivy is a really good source of diptera, including hoverflies, and bees at this time of year
Besides Honey bees today there were lots of Ivy bees along with Calliphora vomitoria, Myathropa flora, Eristalis tenax etc

Agreed - I work in aedes mosquitoes, which have homomorphic sex chromosomes & an XY system. At the single individual long-read scale throughout diptera, people often start with a (homogametic) female for the simple reason that they’re bigger, juicier, and have more DNA-rich tissue accessible…

Are there any keys or ID guides at all? Just found a couple in a diptera sample, would be good to get to a name to record.

Twee verwanten: Phaonia trimaculata (vrouw) en Phaonia Tuguriorum (man). De eerste is een stuk schaarser, larven parasiteren op o.a. de larven van de Koolvlieg (Delia radicum), de tweede is het hele jaar door te zien, parasiteert op emelten (larven van langpootmuggen). #diptera #ElkeDagEenInsect
