#Dodecahedra
My Roman historian friend, Guy de la Bedoyere (Time Team buds), may have finally cracked the riddle of the Roman dodecahedra!!!

Sphalerite:
- A sulphide mineral
- An important zinc ore
- Forms in various types of deposits, e.g., hydrothermal, metamorphic, sedimentary...
- Its name comes from the Greek word "σφαλεροζ/sphaleros" (treacherous) because it was easily mistaken for galena #minerals

TIL that regular dodecahedra are not the only dodecahedra whose faces are all congruent pentagons.

I can confirm that there was no ritual or processional or religious aspect to my cutting dodecahedra out of blocks of limestone. But there was swearing.

At the end of this #DodecaBakeOff Easter Monday, I wanted to share this montage of all the fabulous makes, bakes & creations!

Well done everyone and thank you for giving me a smile today! You've all been wonderful!

Keep fighting the good fight - We shall make what we want to make!💪

A thing.
(okay, some rhombic dodecahedra packed, then turned into only the outer shell, and subdivided.)

Any artefact researcher faces various challenges in their work. I wrote this to shine some light on some of these issues & to highlight why I found the recent Norton Disney dodecahedra situation concerning.

Drowning in dodecahedra of unusual solids, vanadium, agates, otolith

Maybe those “mystery dodecahedra” found in Roman settlements were an early fidget spinner?
Before fidget spinners were invented we had rings and watches.

And before rings or watches I guess it was twigs and strings or some shit.

Dont ask me, im not a fidget spinner historian.

*pushes glasses up even farther* technically, only a regular convex dodecahedron has pentagonal faces; you can also have concave dodecahedra and irregular dodecahedra that do not have regular pentagons as faces, including ones with hexagons!

The Romans mastered engineering but they didn’t realize that d12s roll better without knobs on them
Beautifully crafted Roman dodecahedron discovered in Lincoln—but what were they for?
Roman dodecahedra are something of an enigma: there is no known mention of these 12-sided, hollow objects in ancient Roman texts or images. First discovered in the 18th century, around 130 dodecahedra...

Incidentally, this is why we still don't really know what the dodecahedra were for. Because Romans are like "whatever, it's a logistical thing, we don't care" and didn't write basic facts of life down. This is more common throughout history than one might think. Including "losing" entire cities.
If you ask someone today to name the builder of Hadrian's Wall, they would give you a funny look. But historical memory is odd, and right up to the 1800s we forgot who built it.

Until in 1840 John Hodgson, an obscure Northumbrian clergyman, published the LONGEST footnote in history... 1/22

The other day, I reposted someone's animation whose description was something like "rhombic dodecahedra tiling space". That could also be the description of this animation of mine.

True. Although those Roman bronze dodecahedra are definitely NOT for knitting glove fingers and anyone who tells you that they are is full of shit and shouldn't be trusted on anything.
