For some reason, I waited until now to read Jessica Hagedorn’s incendiary and cinematic novel Dogeaters—but maybe 2025 is as good as any to remind us of dictatorship's savagery and the innocents caught in its crossfire. #Dogeaters #JessicaHagedorn #Booksky #BooksIRead #Novelsfor2025

Patrick Rosal sings the praises of Jessica Hagedorn’s revolutionary Dogeaters: “I mean to say, the book is haunted. Phantasms inhabit every chapter.”

Dogeaters wasn’t just the first Filipino American novel I ever read; it was the first work of literary fiction I picked up on my own outside of a classroom. I was in my mid-twenties. I had already …

Hagedorn gives the reader an often harrowing slice of life in post-war, post-colonial Manila, as well as a sharp critique of the legacy of colonialism, including the corruption of the Marcos regime, the pervasive influence of American culture, & the shocking disparity between rich & poor. 📚💙

There used to be a website called Shelfari, and you would post your books there. It was bragging for nerds. And even though this is not my complete collection of Philippine Literature in English, I am compelled to share it, haha. How many have you read, and which ones did you like?

The first time your players interact with Lunars could be an unexpected surprise for them. Rather than typical Lunars, they might be Doblian Dogeaters, who worship Sakkar, the Sabretoothed God of Fear, not the Seven Mothers. Or on the opposite end of the scale, Danfive Xaron worshippers are fun.

To see Hagedorn's book published with the orderly black spine and penguin logo is disorienting. In his introduction, Pat Rosal says, "To read Dogeaters, you've got to have a taste for danger. You've got to love listening to someone who has kissed the devil on the cheek and lived to tell the tale.”
