#Dolichospermum
DAY 123
SPECIES 123 - Dolichospermum crassum
STAGE: Bacteria
MEDIUM: Chromatek Paper. HWC + QoR Watercolor. Writech pen

NOTES: Not that I need to be challenged more😄, but I wanted to attempt this specimen that's partially out of focus submerged in the broth

I recently bought a 3D printer and the first thing I chose to print was a Dolichospermum model. I plan to print as many algae species as I can find to take out to public talks. This model is from: hab.whoi.edu/regions-reso...

This Bothrostoma like sp #ciliates about 280 Micron in length sure has an appetite! You can see #Dolichospermum, #Asterionella, and a filamentous algae sticking out of its body.

With little spring rain and recent warm weather we are seeing blooms of Blue-green Algae.
In Bucks last week and found the curly Dolichospermum circinale, looking like a microbial charm bracelet.
Heterocysts spherical 9 µm.
Alkanete 14 µm wide, 22 µm long.
Common Spike-rush & Water Dock nearby.

In deze plas is al het andere waterleven #verdrongen door een bloei van #blauwalgen.

Als je met de microscoop 🔬 kijkt dan zie je dat er meerdere soorten in de soep zitten 🥣 (zie Alt+tekst).

#Plankton is wonderlijk gaaf. Zojuist in de Haarlemmermeerse Bosplas geweest. Het wemelt vooral van de #Polyarthra en hun eitjes. Tevens wat #Dolichospermum #citizenscientist #freshwater

Last week, there was a late-season potentially toxic blue-green algae bloom in Sandy Lake, Bedford, Nova Scotia.

Has anyone seen similar late blooms in other HRM lakes recently? Let me know!

I found this pic I made in Sep 2022 - the annual W Lake Erie algae blooms are largely caused by the cyanobacteria Microcystis, but sometimes the cyano. Dolichospermum (aka Dolly) takes over in fall causing a "Dolly bloom"

🧪 Looking for a commercial lab in the U.S. that can perform the ELISA test for saxitoxin.
Gene marker identified in our small freshwater lake in Ontario, Canada. Same dominant species of #cyanobacteria as in Lake Erie. No test available in Canada.

New paper out in Freshwater Biology!
We found that nutrient reductions in a hypereutrophic Québec lake led to a shift from colonial Microcystis toward filamentous Dolichospermum — a reminder that lake recovery is rarely simple.

I 💚 working with stellar collaborators!!

New manuscript from the lab! Interesting story developing, we didn’t find any Aphanizomenon nitrogenase genes despite being the primary bloom former! Instead, Dolichospermum takes charge of fixing nitrogen during the bloom.

The satellite photo is from NOAA's Great Lakes Lab algae bloom tracker (www.glerl.noaa.gov/res/HABs_and...) and the color portion is indicative of an algae bloom, which was Dolly (Dolichospermum) that day :)

I really like this Dolichospermum flos-aquae picture I took with my field scope a few months ago. It had a great view of the whole filament, with in focus vegetative cells, heterocytes, and a nice centrally located akinete. It is a great specimen for using a taxonomic key with.
