This is actually the same kind of logic used in the Ford Magic Doorgate which swung up, down, or side to side but that was more so that you could climb in the back without hitting your head or being blocked by luggage over the top. The honda ridgeline uses a similar tailgate too.

At the start of march I had an appt to replace my fire door as part of changes to housing regs. We're over five months down the line and today they came to fit the third (technically fourth) new door.... only to find this time said door was the wrong size... 5th time lucky?
