In 2000, we had protests (*in-person*!) about DoubleClick’s use of cookies for advertising, and the potential to track people across as many as 1500 (🤣) websites. They dodged the objections, Google bought DoubleClick, and every harm that was feared came to pass. archive.nytimes.com/www.nytimes....

If the Internet wants to go back to websites again, it needs to clean up the spam, ads, popups, 0Auth callbacks, third party widgets, and doubleclick intrusions. Invasive advertising has killed classic Internet. No one surfs anymore because no one CAN surf anymore (without adblockers).

The golden age was Google circa 1999. Before they merged with Doubleclick and focussed on maximizing advertising revenue, back when they were 100% focussed on building mindshare by *doing text search better* (and the advertisers hadn't learned SEO tricks to bamboozle them).

The inflection point mistake was letting Google buy doubleclick. That never should have been allowed.
people were using the internet to make money the entire time

it’s when they decided they were entitled to make ALL the money. which is an important difference
