#RomanSiteSaturday One of the main roads leading into the town of Dougga, Tunisia

It leads straight to the Forum and Temple of Jupiter, much of it incredibly well preserved!

For #RomanSiteSaturday, here is the magnificent Theatre of Dougga in Tunisia, one of the best preserved in Africa

Built in 168 AD, it could hold 3500 people (though Dougga only had ~5000 inhabitants). Likely people came from far and wide to see plays here!

This place never fails to amaze - The Temple of Jupiter in Dougga, Tunisia, built ~166 AD!

How is this still standing, after so many years!?

🙋‍♂️ Me for scale!

Dougga or Thugga was a Berber, Punic and Roman settlement in northern Tunisia. The archaeological site covers 65 hectares. UNESCO made Dougga a World Heritage Site in 1997. It was founded in the 6th century BC, but is best preserved Roman small town in Africa. #RomanSiteSaturday

#TombTuesday - The Libyco-Punic Mausoleum of Dougga (Tunisia), a remarkable 2nd-century BC royal tomb standing 21 metres high. The Punic-Libyan inscription states the mausoleum was dedicated to Numidian Prince Ateban. It features three levels and combines local and Hellenistic elements.

Vegan rock legend Bryan Adams took to the stage at the ancient Roman Theatre of Dougga on Monday night, waving the Palestinian flag with a keffiyeh & calling out “Free Palestine.”

A mosaic of a tame gazelle wearing a collar with a bell, from Dougga in Tunisia in 3c AD. "Bodala" seems to be a (nick)name but the significance is not clear. (Bardo Museum, Tunis) #mosaicmonday

In 2004 I was getting a shave and haircut in Dougga, Tunisia. An elderly gentleman in the barbershop heard that I was American and began to regale me (in a combination of French and English) with an account of watching various elements of the Battle of Kasserine Pass when he was a child.

The magnificently-preserved Temple of Jupiter at Dougga, Tunisia (with me for scale).

This is perhaps the best-preserved Roman city in North Africa, so is rightfully a UNESCO World Heritage site.
