For today's #ForestFriday I've chosen a peculiar scene, which I took in the grounds of Dudmaston Hall. There was a dramatic dead tree with its bare branches outstretched like a singer on stage which contrasted with the cloud gilled sky above and the leaf-filled trees surrounding it. Used a monochrome filter to ramp up the drama.

There were some lovely looking wooded areas but I didn't have the time capacity that day to explore them - will have to return!

Photograph taken looking up at a bronze sculpture called 'Seated Figure Against Curved Wall' from 1956-57, by the artist Henry Moore. Used a monochrome filter, but apart from some colour in the wood, there was little difference. Wanted a different angle so crouched at its feet and looked up.

Image shows a curved piece of grainy wood like the backrest of a bench and a low, narrow ledge as the seat. On this is seated a dark, elongated sculpture of a female figure. Her legs are bent quite high as the seat is so low. Feet are together, knees a little apart, right arm resting on right knee with open palm curved in an almost begging pose. One lump for a breast and a pea-shaped head. The light from the bright spotlights (out of view) bounce off the surface of the sculpture, particularly the left shin and collarbone.

Wanted to swerve a section of the motorway on my way home from the Cotswolds so took a detour into Shropshire to Dudmaston Hall. The place is beautiful in stunning grounds, and apart from some comical paintings which will provide sarcasm fodder for weeks to come, there was an amazing modern art collection. Saw Milo, Kandinsky, Moore, Hepworth and others, all purchased over the years by the Labouchere family.

The words of the purchaser are displayed below the sculpture which read;

"There was a wonderful international exhibition of paintings in Brussels soon after we got there and....there were very few in the British pavilion, there were no modern pictures at all, and so I hung a few in my house.
Henry Moore was very pleased by this, and he let me have this for practically nothing."

Photograph taken looking up at a line of three wall-mounted bells (the line was more extensive than three!) in the servants' quarters at the wonderful Dudmaston Hall in Shropshire. Below each bell is a label - Alcove Room, Dining Room, Mr W. W. Whitmore's Bedroom. Each bell sits on an almost small letter 'e' to aid its movement and ability to make the clanger bit sound when rung. Fascinating shadows are cast on the antique-white walls behind.

Check me out! Am destined to be a 'rugby lad' now because look at the size of my glass of ale! OK, so I can’t catch a ball and don't fancy getting knocked to the floor then squished by a sweating, mud-covered, hairy man-giant...but perhaps I could join for the apres-ruggers? They think it's tobacco in this fancy long pipe, which quite frankly looks more like the maid's candle snuffer, but it isn’t. Sneaked in a new plant into the glasshouse when Gary the gardener was on his lunch break. He's not noticed it yet but it's thriving! Good job he has no sense of smell. Would like the ale to look a bit less like a cheeky 'cosmopolitan' but I'm sure the ladies will still be impressed, especially once they notice my silky new blue necktie. Anyway, perhaps I've had a bit much, can't seem to get my jacket buttons done up - Mrs Smith the housekeeper will have my guts for garters if she sees me like this!

Had a wonderful detour visit to Dudmaston Hall in Shropshire last weekend, whilst swerving a section of motorway. There were so many classical paintings which have given me sarcasm fodder.

This painting is called 'The Wolryche Fool with the Dudmaston Ale Glass' by George Alsop in the 1720s and 1730s. It's a seated, fair-haired man with a large nose wearing a soft hat in blue and red, and a partially buttoned deep brown jacket with white shirt underneath. In his right hand he's holding an enormous conical glass of a pink liquid. Between the fingers of his left hand is a thin silver pipe, emitting smoke from the end. The painting is in an elaborate gold frame and hangs in the entrance hall.

Gold can also be floral! Photograph taken using a macro setting of a Welsh poppy bud against a dark navy background. Shot in the grounds of Dudmaston Hall in Shropshire.

'Shot' is a bit generous when in reality I held up other visitors trying to get past my crouching form with navy coat over one arm as a background and phone in the other trying to get the perfect photo.

Image shows a Welsh poppy bud starting to burst open so its golden petals are seen in a squashed ellipse shape. Either side of the golden petals is the outer bud casing which is covered in tiny, unruly hairs. The casing with drop off once the flower fully emerges.

Photograph taken of a beautifully hand-painted, garden-themed door at Dudmaston Hall in Shopshire. The notice next to it (out of shot) said;

"I was just an ordinary plain pine door until Mary Dorothea Whitmore decorated me, making me unique.
A delicate, charming, feminine view of gardening at the end of the 18th century: the elegant Georgian period.
The tools are not so different from those used today (you recognise them don't you?).

I used to hang in a simple but pretty 'cottage orné':
Rookery cottage was for drinking tea and playing the piano;
A rustic destination after a walk in The Dingle.

Absolutely fell in love with Moll Doll's door. It's a gardener's delight! Bit of glare on the photo as it was behind perspex for preservation.

Image shows the bottom section of an old pine door painted an aged-cream, then covered in hand-painted designs of deep green, pewter and browns. There are green ivy leaves winding up the central and edge timbers, and also smaller ivy leaves on the bevels of the inset panels. The bottom left panel has an old, brown, chunky watering can with a range of garden forks and rakes fanning out behind it. Above that is an elongated mahogany-coloured watering can hanging from a ribbon with a grey spade horizontally behind, and hoe and a rake like crossed swords too. The bottom right panel has a green bell cloche with garden tools fanning out behind. Above that is a long tool, perhaps a dibber or the base of a fancy small fork. Again garden tools fan out behind it - a spade, a fork and two rakes. The central section has a selection of pewter-coloured buckets and tools. You can just see the bottom of the top right panel which has an old wheelbarrow painted on it.

As you can tell from the wittering, I love it!

I've been holding this relay baton for hours! Hours I tell you! So flipping long my hand has turned black and nobody gives a hoot! Look at it, it's withering before my eyes, or it would be if I was allowed to turn my head without getting shouted at by the stroppy little man wielding paintbrushes with a flourish like he's painting Jesus himself. I'm just a bloke that wants a pint but nope, the missus has commissioned this 'effort' to hang in the entranceway. Every time I walk through the door I'll be met with how ridiculous I look. This is payback for forgetting her birthday. Never going to forget again, am I? She chose the outfit too. Goodness only knows where she found it all but I can hazard a guess! I'm in my fancy dressing gown that I save for that one night a year when she lets me near her, a bed throw from the guest room turbaned round my waist and cuffs that look like the old neck ruffs from her lot gathering dust in the attic. And to top it off, she plonked her Cher wig from the local talent competition on my head. Oh the indignity! Lesson learnt. Fellas, don't forget the missus' birthday! For the love of all that's holy this chap had better pack up soon.

Painting is of one of the Wolryche gentlemen, either Sir Francis or John and is painted in the style of the Dutch master, Willem Wissing but likely by Sir Godfrey Kneller.

Image shows an oil painting in a heavy gilt frame hanging on a dark coloured wall. There's a bit of light flare in the bottom left corner (occupational hazard when you're little) but it doesn't interrupt the main scene. It's a portrait of gentleman from head to lower thigh. He is wearing a big dark brown curly wig, a military breastplate over which lies a white lace cravat (yes it's white the combination!), brocade jacket underneath and a sizeable lumpy red sash. One hand is resting on a plumed helmet whilst the other gloved hand, holds a baton. I imagine at the time he looked quite the fashionable gent!
