Cool! I think from the beigeness that I have the same tool — a Duratool something-or-other.

Would this mod improve performance at all, or is it a safety/correctness mod?

I'm using Duratool branded lead free, it works well most of the time. This Pico stopped working properly and it's not right even after I fixed the cold joint pictured, so I'm less confident about my soldering in general now.

One of my favourite things to do in this retro hobby is unboxing loads of retro "things".

Like Mark I upgraded to the Hakko and gave my duratool station away.
I kinda regret that now as I would have really liked to have had a go at upgrading it.

On the subject of soldering tips, what do you do about the fumes, if anything? I get a headache so been thinking of buying one of these 👇 but don’t know how effective, might be useless.

I have one of these with some LED strips in the hood so its also a positionable lamp. Its much the same, but its more useful having it above your work. They are pretty noisy though, so i hooked it up to my soldering station so it only turns on when you lift the iron. cpc.farnell.com/duratool/d00...

Four X did a video recently on this upgrade and explained about the inrush current.
It’s this inrush current that also helps with the initial suction but could potentially damage it long term.
