I’d put it differently. EBV is almost certainly necessary (but not sufficient) for MS. So prevent EBV and you prevent MS. But most people who get EBV (and most people do) never get MS. EBV puts the bullet in the chamber but things unknown pull the trigger.

99.99% of people who get EBV don’t get HL, but most people who get HL wouldn’t have gotten it without first getting EBV.

EBV-Seq enables identification of EBV-infected cells. Therefore patients with lupus were shown to have been infected with very specific memory B cells, reprogrammed, and act as drivers for autoimmunity overall.

I got mono (EBV) in 1982, was diagnosed with chronically active EBV in 1985, and was diagnosed with lupus (after years of positive ANA & anti-DNA tests) in 2012. Suffice it to say that EBV has had a profound affect on my life. Oh, and EBV gave my late husband type 1 diabetes at age 20.
Researchers also believe EBV plays a role in a wide range of serious conditions — from lupus and certain cancers to rheumatoid arthritis — and may trigger some cases of chronic fatigue syndrome. Some suspect it could be a hidden driver of long Covid.
