#EORC25
You can watch all the sessions from #EORC25 here including my @copim.bsky.social colleagues Judith and Kevin talking about @openbookcollective.bsky.social and me (in Session Three) talking about open source software, AI, and all sorts of infrastructure stuff.
Watch all four sessions from the Edinburgh Open Research Conference 2025. This year focusing on the question:

“What’s stopping us?” Asking what barriers we face, the challenges slowing progress, and searching for strategies to overcome them.

You too can divest from US software companies by switching to open source software. I discussed this one week ago at #EORC25

Tech companies are marketing this to universities because, as I said in my #EORC25 talk the other day (opensauce.simonxix.com/eor2025/), big tech openly think that universities are marks ripe for exploitation. They don't even hide it.

Had lots of fun attending #EORC25 today. As usual the talks were fantastic and the people were lovely. I feel so lucky we’ve got such a great community here at Edinburgh 😀

Thanks again to the team at Edinburgh Open Research! #EORC25 remains my favorite conference of the year. Great presentations and always interesting and valuable discussions in the breaks (also, the food really is good).
Now I just have 2+hours to wait in Waverly as I remembered my train time wrong

Big thanks to the organisers of #EORC25. Great discussions of open research, great organising, great venue. There's something special about meeting in the shadow of an extinct volcano.

I acknowledge @donnalanclos.com in my references for this paper but thanks also to @lawriephipps.co.uk for pointing me to Donna's keynote on the 2019 Department of Education report 'Realising the potential of technology in education' which I refer to in my paper. #EORC25

Such a good conference, #EORC25! Full props to the whole team for pulling out all the stops! Open research: let's help fix the broken systems and return research to the communities.

interesting to see the cross-polinisation btw simultaneous #EORC25 Edinburgh and #CoLIS25 Glasgow: @simonxix.com referenced a CoLIS25 talk earlier, now CoLIS25 co-organiser @milenado.bsky.social presents her EU-funded #ORBIT project to promote #OpenResearch in Bulgaria

Several people approached me with very nice comments about my presentation including one person who said thank you for mentioning the genocide of Palestinians on stage at the conference. Software /is/ political and we can't ignore the embeddedness in systems of apartheid and colonialism. 🇵🇸 #EORC25

Our @copim.bsky.social colleague just gave a powerful presentation on open software for open research at #EORC25
@simonxix.com absolutely slaying it.
June 4, 2025 at 1:42 PM
Small changes cumulatively can make a big difference. @simonxix.com recommends divesting from one piece of proprietary software and replacing with a more ethical open source version. #EORC25

Wish I were at #EORC25, or yesterday at #DIAMAS, but hey, this endless marking will not get done attending important conferences innit

Ali Kay (Leeds) talking about the efficacy of OA mandates... my spider senses are tingling! To what extent do mandates constrict open access as an experimental approach to publishing and disseminating work, instead forcing openness to be a 'thing' and enforce a compliance culture? #EORC25
June 4, 2025 at 10:52 AM
#EORC25 Ali Kay orcid.org/0009-0009-52... says that when the 2021 REF OA policy was introduced, there was significant growth in repository deposits, but only because they had to
I was a researcher in the US when the NIH launched their green OA policy years ago. History doesn't repeat, but it rhymes

Damon Querry is talking about taking Research Information Management data and making if FAIR findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable
I'm glad interoperability in research management is finally getting some attention. Too much data is locked away and inaccessible.
