New at my Patreon... My big Eurail trip in 2023 started well in Lisbon, Portugal, at a rooftop bar serving a modernised version of a classic local dish called bacalhau à brás:

Love riding on a train. Wish we had a more extensive system. Years ago I purchased a eurail pass & traveled through Europe on a Eurail Pass that allowed me to get on and off at the stops I chose at will. One of the highlights of my life.

Wat je wel/niet moet reserveren en waar dat kan, kan best complex zijn. Gelukkig heeft @seatsixtyone.bsky.social daar een goed overzicht van dat ik regelmatig raadpleeg: www.seat61.com/interrail-an...

And it was affordable. I had a Eurail pass and spent weeks on vacations to Paris, Munich, Amsterdam, etc. You could always find a cheap room. I stayed in a in-call hotel in Pigalle in Paris because the room was cheaper per hour for my overnight stays than getting a room for the week.

In 1983 i had a six month eurail pass that took me everywhere with no hassle. No buying tickets, just jump aboard first class. Phenomenal is the word.

I wrote this because Eurail in Greece trips up a lot of people: the pass is valid, but that doesn’t mean it’s actually useful for the trip most visitors are planning.

Eurail Greece: Why the Pass Is a Gateway, Not a Travel Plan
The Core Mistake Travelers Make With Eurail Greece The most important thing to understand about Eurail in Greece is not whether the pass is valid. It is valid. The real issue is that validity does not equal usefulness. Greece exposes a weakness in the way many travelers think about rail passes. A Eu

I did the Eurail pass thing a decade earlier so even more primitive. Paper maps, foreign language phrase books, and pay phones. Today’s young’uns would have been lost. Not that I wasn’t, but still

I spent the summer of 1993 traveling around on a Eurail pass — would crack up if we crossed paths at a hostel then. Remember the bulletin boards and using the main post office to coordinate with friends? And when I try to explain this trip to anyone born after 1990 … minds blown.

This makes me nostalgic for the 2 months I spent in 1993, backpacking around on Eurail. I had very little idea what I was doing, beyond what my Let’s Go Europe guide had to tell me, but I guess that was the point.
