Environments Through Time in Africa
Victoria Rainis asking the important questions The "Environments Through Time" course at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) is currently underway for our MSc Biological Science and MSc Earth Science students. As part of the first week of the course we took advantage of two of our current MSc research students (Chiara Rainio and Bouwe Groeneveld) and two visiting researchers (Victoria Rainis and Trevor Hill) to give the students an insight into past environmental change in Africa.

Earth's inner core is nearly as hot as the Sun's surface. Around 5,400°C.

Yet it's SOLID.

Even stranger? The cooler iron surrounding it is LIQUID.

How can hotter iron remain solid while cooler iron melts?
