A rock is a good thing, too, you know. If the Isles of Earthsea were all made of diamond, we'd lead a hard life here. Enjoy the illusions, lad, and let the rocks be rocks.

I finished Ursula K. Le Guin's A Wave in the Mind today. I adore the personality in her essays. She's so wry and earnest, whether she's writing about Tolkien or Pard or writing as craft. I need to pick up the next Earthsea book once I'm done with LotR and Battle Royale.

I started reading the Wizard of Earthsea graphic novel, which is so beautifully illustrated in watercolour. I was also blown away by Joachim Trier's The Worst Person in the World.

EARTHSEA MENTIONED‼️

I think Earthsea was the first book where I thought ‘fantasy can be like THIS?’

One of my favorite authors, as it happens. Long live Earthsea and the Left Hand of Darkness <3

I'm of the mind as well that you must fail in order to figure out what you're doing and if we can share our failures with one another we can all grow and learn together

Reread A Wizard of Earthsea this week and it still holds. Everyone remembers the shadow chase, but what gets me is the ending. Not a battle. A naming. Ged calls the thing by his own name and it stops being a monster and becomes the part of himself he ran from. The braver thing is stopping the run.

Looking at the detail of it, it’s a bit of cross between LeGuin’s Earthsea and any lands imagined by Tolkien.

Both the 4th (Tehanu) and 5th (The Other Wind) were from later, and quite distinctive from the classic trilogy.
Also a short story collection, Tales from Earthsea.
The trilogy is the book I've most re-read, quite a while ago ;)

Last time it was a wizard of earthsea but I have a large collection of other stories to choose from. The alchemist by Coelho and the last unicorn by beagle among them

believe it or not I wasn't massively into fantasy as a kid and I bounced *hard* off of Earthsea when I was little, think I'm going to have to give it another try

Listening to a lot of dungeon/fantasy synth inspired by Earthsea makes me want to read it. Going to get it in French and then struggle and give up again 🔥

Has anyone on here read A Wizard of Earthsea? Is it worth it? I tried the audiobook but hated the narration so im thinking of just buying a physical copy of it and reading it

magic as creativity + power in harry potter vs earthsea

something which maintains status quo: to be approved & sanctioned,

something that does struggle through contemp power systems in which it's exposed but ultimately is much more fundamental and accessible -> transforming the world that uses it.
