I don’t know that sewing is a “weird hobby” but I do often get looks when I tell someone I made the dress I’m wearing. This year I made a shirtwaist, a skirt, a bodiced petticoat, 2 dresses, and a quilt.

Afternoon dresses were the daytime attire of the Belle Epoque socialite. Less formal then their evening counterparts, they were considered half-dress.

On this day in 1901, the Edwardian Era began.

This 1902 French evening gown belonged to Queen Alexandra - she was a lady who liked to sparkle! Bling is not just a 21st century trend!!

Since the Met, as usual, doesn't provide details in the image, these elegant gold leather shoes - which I'd call Oxford-style laceups, not slippers - were made by American designer Alfred Cammeyer sometime between 1900-1910. #fashionhistory #shoefashion #edwardianfashion #shoehistory

#ottomanempire I was particularly struck by the long white gloves this elegant woman is wearing.

"Michael had nearly cried. “Nobody wants me,” he said, and of course the lady in the evening-dress could not stand that.

“I do,” she said, “I so want a third child.”"

I had a pretty extensive thread on the subject last Friday. The late Victorian and Edwardian eras produced some of the fanciest, sexiest women's boots ever. #fashionhistory #boothistory #edwardianfashion #victorianfashion #footwearhistory #highbuttonboots

The notion that every, or almost every, corset-wearer in Victorian and Edwardian times "tight-laced" to get their waists down to an impossibly tiny size is one of the most enduring myths of #fashionhistory. This video explodes that myth. #corsets #corsetry #victorianfashion #edwardianfashion
Curious about Victorian corsets? This video from a couple years ago has Bernadette explaining how the illusion of tiny waists worked, as well as dressing in a typical late-Victorian shirtwaist and skirt, complete with corset, and demonstrating its flexibility and comfort.

#Edwardian fashion wasn’t just for the ladies, gentlemen of the era embraced style, too. 🎩
From hats and pocket watches to tailored suits, men of all classes had their own fashion trends.

According to one calculator, this wedding would cost a cool $7 million today. Josephine Drexel was a member of a prominent New York high-society family. #edwardianfashion #edwardianbridalfashion #bridalfashionhistory #fashionhistory #1900sfashion
Worn #onthisday in 1904 at Josephine Drexel's $200K #wedding to Dr. John Emmet in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York, NY. Would be grateful if someone could date these #shoes please. My (wild) guess is C19-C20. Due to their size I guess they are women’s shoes. #georgianfashion #victorianfashion #edwardianfashion
