#Embeddedness
I am begging you to take a hard look at a single European country's politics. save for the embeddedness of universal healthcare, this is a myth

Also, anyone who is thinking about private university boards right now should be reading @charlieeaton.bsky.social and Albina Gibadullina.

The whole enterprise just reeks of profound disrespect for the skilled nature of this work and an absolutely masculine view of intelligence (of the user) as utterly divorced from practical ability or embeddedness in the world. Tech culture is part of it, but also reflects much older STEM mythmaking

He labels this “dislocative nationalism” because it symbolically lifts Iran out of its regional and Islamic embeddedness and ties it instead to an imagined Aryan, quasi‑European civilizational space.

The social, the cultural, the economic, the interactional. The immense rootedness of universities in their towns and cities. The connectedness. The embeddedness.

We need a different narrative. We need a different discourse. We need evangelists, not apologists, for higher education.

New study on elite tax migration. Using IRS data, we show that while tax rates matter, embeddedness matters more. Millionaires don’t flee high-tax states unless their networks are disrupted. Embeddedness > incentives. States can still tax the rich. www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/...

This is how you get people who are nostalgic for blogging but hooked on the network embeddedness and engagement of short form social posting to feel comfortable blogging more.
What do streets think about being able to read long form content / blogs from within blacksky.community (powered by standard.site)

I had Opus 4.8 in Claude Code write a sophisticated, if minor, academic paper from a archive of hundreds of de-identified research files from years ago

I had to use GPT-5.5 Pro as a reviewer, it spotted one major error & some minor points. Opus corrected them. embeddedness-gradient.netlify.app

“Resistance 2.0 is much more locally grounded and community embedded,” said Dana Fisher...The local embeddedness of the movement will help create the kind of community resilience that we will all need in the coming months and years.

It's not that it's unreasonable to be disappointed by a book (something we can't control). For example, being in the mood for a rompy clown romance only to discover that the book in question is

Very good argument for the social embeddedness of science right here:
I continue to be flabbergasted by retired fb friends who were well-respected in their scientific fields who now keep reposting AI slop (mostly the aging rock/movie star adopts pet and donates shitton to shelter kind).

the underlying editorial piece badly conflates partisan polarization with politics and undertheorizes the policy origin of e.g. COVID outcomes. wishcasting, cold war-era thinking about the political (dis)embeddedness of science
I fundamentally disagree w/ the idea that science is “apolitical.” Any critical thinker can see that what we call “science” is inherently invested with power, that the history of science is highly political, and that its benefits & risks are not distributed equally. It is important to be honest here
In the wake of the U.S. election, Natl Academy of Sciences President Marcia McNutt has authored a spot-on editorial in Science, stressing the apolitical nature of science and how it remains vital to informing a lot of public policy. Best read all week!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Paradoxically -- at least to libertarians -- this sort of social embeddedness *resists* extreme slips in ideology.

Because we lean into distributed social sanction we cultivate advanced ecosystems of strategies and social institutions that were more robust against entryism.
