In April 2019 I had an embolization to shrink uterine fibroids. Doc scheduled a 6 month MRI follow-up to check if tumors actually shrank, since sometimes new vessels grow. At 4:30 pm the day before my late December MRI, Blue Cross called to say they’d cancelled it on my behalf.

Funnily enough, my gyno had recommended a hysto back in 2018/2019, bc the tumor was so large and embedded, but insurance insisted on the embolization first. And I went along b/c who wouldn’t choose the less invasive thing if it might work?

I did experience temporary relief post embolization, but by summer 2020 I was back to the worst of the worst:
I had the heaviest day of my heaviest period constantly.
Without a break of more than 3 or 4 days every month.
For the next three years.

So right now, both embolization and radiosurgery are planned. Embolization risks are between 5 and 8%, and I'll take those chances.
I'm not doing good, it's a LOT to take in at once, but I have faith in the medical team and am hopeful for the future nonetheless.

that makes so much sense!!! they put me on progesterone after my hospitalization to stop my period while they dealt with the pulmonary stuff so I could have the permanent procedure (uterine embolization, 10/10 recommend) and it truly was like a dark cloud lifting I can only see now looking back

Off for the 2nd embolization today. Interactive radiology will insert radioactive spheres to block the ducts where the cancer is entering my liver. Outpatient, of course. @thankscancer.bsky.social

I know we both hate unsolicited internet medical advice but I will say, just because it’s a procedure a lot of people with haunted uteri aren’t told about as an option, I have adenomyosis and wasn’t able to have surgery so they did an embolization which is non-invasive (15 min outpatient)

I was lucky that the least invasive procedure (uterine embolization, where they go in through your wrist with wires to cauterize the arteries that feed into the uterus) worked for me
but I was working with a pulmonary specialist, not a gyno, and some doctors don’t know what they don’t know!

Small recap on cAVMs : the general consensus is to leave them alone. At the moment, treating them often has too many downsides to consider it and I was expecting my case to be the exact same, meaning I wouldn't really have to worry until I'm like 40 or something...
