About 5 years ago, I learned about Emscripten and started working on some test code to refresh my very out of date c++ knowledge. A little while later, I learned of the upcoming release of SDL3 and migrated to that. Then I ate shit in a job interview for Mojang for said rusty c++ knowledge.

wasm32 caps memory at 4GB, and that's too small for LLMs.

So we're adding a wasm64 Emscripten target to Rust upstream 🦀

Currently looking into how to use the official WASM builds of `libopenmpt` directly with zero Node.js-specific support. This is an uphill battle alright.
Understandably, they used Emscripten to compile the library, but that alone is a pail with trouble filled to the brim.
- Emscripten emits a […]

A PoC Emscripten glue code patcher. Tested the patched glue with Deno, not yet with Firefox as there's no higher level wrappers to test audio with. Not sure how I'm going to introduce user-supplied WASM streams or […]

[CW: Additional comments and ranting.]

- It's nice that Emscripten included a polyfilled JS version of the WASM file, but that's unlikely to be needed, unless there's a hardened browser that does not support WASM somehow.
- Probably will go for the patched glue route that may or may not require […]

Size of code+assets: 104mb unoptimised- I could get this down to maybe 10mb.
Size including the runtime (nw.js) - Nearly 1GB.
That's a bit bonkers, but that was my decision to port Lua to JS (engine)+JS (game) - Ideally it'd be C++/SDL(engine)+JS (game) -> native plus Emscripten if web requiered.

isn't emscripten a wasm thing now
October 9, 2026 at 3:41 PM
More properly I spent about a week trying to write a program in "wasm" (assembly language for a VM built into your browser, it's how emscripten works), failed, ragequit, put it away for 16 months, came back to it last week, and succeeded (but took another full week to do so, finishing this morning).

This game ruled. When we had a typing course in 90's elementary school, the teachers shrugged because I'd already blown past all their their target metrics. This was entirely Mario's doing.

emscripten devs may deprecate wasm2js output, with eventual removal of the feature.

This'll prevent using current emscripten to make pure-JS output -- but note they have already given up a lot of old-browser backwards-compatible tweaks; eg IE 11 is already off the table.
