endnotes! those who need the citations can deal with it, easier reading for everybody else (at least once they realize there are no discursive endnotes)

If you do end up going with endnotes I think you should make clear in the front matter that they're just cites

Can you do the thing pop nonfiction books sometimes do with endnotes but no superscript pointers to them?

A great essay indeed. Come for the thesis, stay for the endnotes.

It is in dialogue also with my IAS colleague Akshay Venkatesh's prescient 2022 essay which was a call to awareness to the mathematics community. www.math.ias.edu/~akshay/rese...

had to think through how to format and style various kinds of legal/govt citations in endnotes and now I’m ready for a vacation

Some even (as I recall) have their own endnotes.

Submitted the manuscript to @ivpress.bsky.social today (out in under a year, hopefully). It's for laypeople, has discussion questions (which I actually enjoyed writing), and uses . . . ENDNOTES . . . on purpose!!!! (one of the rare good uses of endnotes, IMO)

I think if you want the modal reader to be aware of what you’re citing, keep them inline, and if you want the modal reader to be unaware, make them endnotes

I think the only real choice would be between inline cites and endnotes without superscripts; since you don't have that choice, go with inline cites.

Another ask for collective wisdom:

My book manuscript has no notes. However, it does have inline references like (Mills 1999). I now have a choice: keep it as is, or make all references endnotes.

What's preferable (for a book intended be "crossover"-ish)?

skimming through infinite jest since it's a book someone pointed out to me as having lots of endnotes. some passages are interesting, some i skip past muttering "blah blah blah".

so far i like how the characters seem to constantly wake up soaking, with wet impressions on their beds. sweaty guys

endnotes are a plot by big bookmark to sell twice as many bookmarks

I think "inline references" are generally reasonably unintimidating as long as the reader isn't overwhelmed by them. If those inline references are sprinkled in so heavily that they might disrupt legibility, your work might be more generally accessible if you move towards endnotes instead.

I follow a couple. For me, the value is mostly a way of saying "I dig what you do and I want to support you, here's a monthly tip." Beyond that, I love when someone provides additional insights into their work (I've always been a sucker for endnotes and DVD commentary tracks).

This tool in the library is what I used to research my master’s thesis & doctoral dissertation. We had better have our footnotes & endnotes correct, too! I was thrilled to be able to use Word to type those documents & not a typewriter!

Works cited pages, people! Endnotes!

My forthcoming book, Island Rebels, asks what happens when we read Caribbean radicalism at its edges—through Black, Indigenous & ecological thought. Taking a cue from Gilroy and Moten: read the endnotes.

“Plantationocene” makes old Caribbean and Black theory look brand new.

In lieu of detailed endnotes and citations, read the work of these people, and you too will become a Techno-Optimist.
